Job Summary

The Logistics & Support Organisation sits at the heart of providing support to the UK's Armed Forces. This 850-strong organisation works with both civilian and military personnel across Defence and exists to ensure that wherever Defence is operating, it can outpace, outwit and where necessary out-fight its adversaries. We provide logistic and engineering support to UK Armed Forces at home and abroad and have a broad remit spanning from planning to operational delivery.
We are also driving a results-orientated transformation agenda to modernise Defence's logistic and engineering support services and contributing towards the Defence strategy to meet the UK Government goal of Net Zero 2050.

Within this role the individual will provide expert environmental protection related advice and support to the Duty Holder/Head of Establishment to ensure, and assure, legal, regulatory and policy compliance within area of responsibility.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.
Job Description
Responsible to Deputy Head Operational Energy Authority for providing technical subject matter expertise, advice and guidance to all levels (MOD, Commands, Operational HQs, Units and Fielded-Forces) to ensure that the quality and standard of all Fuels, Oils, Lubes and Associated Products provisioned, transported, stored and used by MOD Armed Forces are of an acceptable standard and Fit for Purpose.
It is also responsible for representing Defence at all relevant technical, industry, national and international meetings and forums to influence the development of the specifications for Fuels, Lubricants and Associated Products, and for maintaining awareness regarding the direction of travel for all F&L product standards and specifications as anticipated by users and producers.
Further responsibilities include the management of all relevant Defence Standards for F&L and influencing the content of future F&L standards and specifications and providing advice and guidance regarding the changing specifications for, and issues affecting the use of, critical consumable F&L products; implicit in this is the provision of advice and guidance to Project Teams and Front Line Commands. Finally, and importantly, the DFTA is responsible for providing the necessary Suitably Qualified & Experienced Personnel (SQEP), linkages and support mechanisms to enable AH OEA to fulfil the Duty Holder-Facing role in terms of technical standards of fuel, oils, lubricants and industrial gases.

Responsibilities
As Aviation Fuels Technical Spt 1 you are responsible for supporting the Air Technical Manager in providing the necessary Technical SME advice, guidance and staff input in order to ensure that all Aviation Fuels, Lubricants and Associated Products used by UK Armed Forces are on specification and able to meet the operational requirements of the FLCs and Defence. In addition, where necessary, you are responsible for attending the relevant Industry, National and International forums and for contributing (on behalf of Defence) to the development of the technical specifications, standards and supporting documents for Aviation Fuels, Lubricants and Associated Products. Specific responsibilities within the scope of responsibilities include:
- Providing Air Technical SME support to contingency planning, Military Strategic Planning and Strategic Command of Ops
- Provide Air Technical SME direction and guidance for Ops at both the operational (HQ) level and tactical (User Unit) level as necessary.
- Contribute to the assurance of coherence of all UK Doctrine on Fuels, Lubricants and Associated products by providing Aviation Technical SME input as necessary.
- Providing Air Technical SME input and advice to the development of future Logistic Doctrine.
- Contribute to the development of National Fuel and Lubricant Concepts.
- Contribute Air Technical SME input as necessary to the maintenance and management of International Fuel Exchange Agreements
- Providing Air Technical SME input and support to the generation/maintenance of FE@R and FE@S.
- Contribute to the collation and management of Defence Fuels, Lubricants and Associated Products risks and issues for Ops and the management of such Risks and Issues within Commands.
- Contribute to the identification and management of Capability risks and issues for Current Operations, Standing Tasks and Contingency Capability.
- Contribute to the collation, analysis and provision of Lessons Identified.
- Contributing to the delivery of cost effective, timely Fuels, Lubricants and Associated products logistics for Defence by providing Air Technical SME advice to suppliers and users as necessary.
- Review of Defence Standard specifications for Fuels, Lubricants and Associated Products as necessary.
- Further duties to be directed by DH OEA.
Essential Criteria
Degree in Chemistry or relevant scientific subject, or HND/HNC in Chemistry plus 3 years’ equivalent experience.
Desirable Criteria
Experience in fuels and lubricants laboratory analysis techniques

A broad understanding of the fuels, lubricants and associated products industry, and the properties and chemistry of such products
Qualifications
Degree in Chemistry or relevant scientific subject, or HND/HNC in Chemistry plus 3 years’ experience
Memberships
Member of a relevant Professional Institute or equivalent body.

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working. This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments.
