Job Overview
The LGI Cancer band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) will be an integral part of the LGI CNS team, looking after patients with a high suspicion of / confirmed diagnosis of Colorectal Cancer. The post holder will work closely with the Lead LGI oncology CNS, Enhanced Recovery team, Faster diagnosis triage CNS team, stoma nursing team and Cancer Support team.
The post holder will be a highly competent, credible, and experienced autonomous practitioner who uses their breadth and specialist knowledge and professional visibility and advanced clinical skills of practice to support patients on the LGI pathway.
The LGI Cancer CNS will specifically manage the surgical part of the Patient Pathway, supervising the band 6 LGI CNS and managing the Band 4 CEA navigator, managing the patient through from Endoscopy (probable cancer) diagnosis and up to the first adjuvant oncology appointment. The CNS will also ensure an improved service for patients who are diagnosed through the emergency pathway.

The post holder will be expected to exercise a high degree of personal professional autonomy and make critical judgements to satisfy the expectations and demands of the role, within a defined framework.
The CNS will demonstrate a higher level of practice through the provision of specialist nursing knowledge and expertise in the management of patients having surgery and other cancer therapies, liaising with colleagues across care settings to expedite specialist assessment, providing holistic packages of care to ensure patients receive prompt and evidence-based care. The CNS role is divided into four general areas – clinical excellence, leadership, education and research/ clinical audit.

The Lower GI Oncology Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) comprises a group of expert doctors, nurses and other health care professionals with a special interest in the diagnosis, treatment and management of people with LGI cancer diagnosis.

This MDT approach across all services ensures that all necessary investigations are carried out as quickly as possible and an agreed programme of treatment is planned which is specific to the patient's needs. Treatment options are then discussed with the patient and their family and started without delay. The Oncology MDT’s link into other health care professionals in primary and secondary care as appropriate, to ensure a seamless service is provided which meets the patient's needs.
We are a dedicated group of enthusiastic and lifelong learners, who work well together in an expanding team to deliver high quality, individualised care to patients with Colorectal Cancer. We work as part of the Cancer Support team based within the Acute trust.
