Senior Microsoft 365 Engineer
Pay: £580 P/D
Location: Sheffield / Birmingham, UK
Function: Microsoft 365 Engineering & Platforms
The Role
We are seeking a Senior Microsoft 365 Platform Engineer to design, build and operate a global Microsoft 365 Connectivity Platform providing a secure, scalable and governed abstraction layer between enterprise applications and Microsoft 365.
Key Responsibilities
Platform & API Architecture
- Design and develop a scalable Microsoft 365 abstraction and connectivity layer.
- Build reusable APIs and integration patterns across Microsoft Graph, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive and Entra ID.
- Design enterprise API standards, governance and lifecycle management.
- Develop secure, resilient and highly available microservices and REST APIs.
- Implement caching, retry, batching and asynchronous processing patterns to optimise Microsoft 365 API consumption.
API Governance & Rate Limiting
- Design intelligent rate limiting, throttling and quota management.
- Implement controls for request volumes, bursts, concurrency, application prioritisation and fair usage.
- Monitor Microsoft Graph consumption and identify optimisation opportunities.
- Establish application onboarding, certification and entitlement processes.
- Automate enforcement of Microsoft 365 API consumption policies.
API Gateway & Management Portal
- Build and evolve an enterprise API Gateway and self-service portal supporting:
- Application registration and onboarding.
- API entitlements and approval workflows.
- Authentication and authorisation.
- Rate limits and quota management.
- Usage analytics and reporting.
- Service health and operational monitoring.
- Audit and compliance reporting.
- Application and platform dashboards.
- The portal should enable engineering teams to self-service Microsoft 365 integration, reducing manual platform intervention.

Cloud, DevOps & Automation
- Build cloud-native services using Azure, including AKS, Functions, App Services and API Management.
- Develop CI/CD pipelines and Infrastructure-as-Code using Terraform and/or Bicep.
- Automate onboarding and deployment across Development, Pilot, UAT and Production.
- Integrate security, risk and governance controls into delivery pipelines.
- Support GitHub Enterprise and/or Azure DevOps engineering practices.
Security & Identity
- Implement least-privilege access and secure application identity models.
- Integrate Microsoft Entra ID authentication and authorisation.
- Manage application permissions, service principals and managed identities.
- Implement comprehensive audit logging and security monitoring.
- Maintain appropriate segregation between environments.
- Ensure alignment with enterprise Cyber Security, Data Protection and regulatory requirements.
Reliability & Operations
- Establish strong SRE, observability and platform reliability practices.
- Implement monitoring, alerting, logging and distributed tracing.
- Define and manage SLIs, SLOs and SLAs.
- Support capacity planning, performance optimisation and resilience.
- Contribute to production support, incident management and continuous improvement.

Experience
We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in:
- Enterprise-scale Microsoft 365 engineering.
- Supporting 100,000+ users or highly distributed environments.
- Building API gateways, integration platforms or developer portals.
- Microsoft Graph abstraction and API governance.
- High-volume API consumption, throttling and traffic management.
- Multi-tenant and segregated environment architectures.
- Cloud-native Azure platforms.
- Highly regulated environments, particularly Financial Services.
- Security, risk and compliance frameworks, including FCA, PRA and GDPR.
