Strategic Planning & Business Development Group

Job Description:

bp’s corporate Mergers & Acquisitions (“M&A”) team's anchor role is to provide a centre of expertise in executing acquisitions, disposals, joint ventures and asset restructurings within the bp Group, with a value in excess of US$50 million.

M&A's core expertise lies in its advisory and transactional ability. On the advisory side we have knowledge and experience in analysing assets and/or businesses to establish sources of value and minimising risks and liabilities. On the transactional front our experience and skills are deployed in assessing the market, pricing and bidding, running sell-side auctions, negotiation, and project management of a transaction to completion. This involves close collaboration with segments and functions internally and numerous external parties including corporates, investment banks, engineering firms, financial investors and advisors. We develop a broad corporate development capability through our access to the internal strategic context and an acute awareness of the evolving external market. The M&A team plays a pivotal role in helping bp in the delivery of its energy transition plans.

Role summary

The M&A Strategy Manager role is a new role within M&A. Reporting to the SVP M&A and Business Development, this role will be responsible for systematically shaping bp’s M&A agenda by identifying, evaluating, and prioritising acquisition and divestment opportunities across the portfolio. This includes ownership of the M&A research and market intelligence, including maintaining the M&A connection with third party data providers. They will also act as a flexible resource to support and occasionally lead discrete M&A projects.

This role is based in London and is part of bp’s global M&A team.

What you will do...

  • Build and maintain a live, prioritised pipeline of inorganic opportunities across bp’s portfolio, grounded in strategic rationale and value creation potential.
  • Lead development of robust financial models (valuation, accretion/dilution, synergy modelling, scenario analysis) to inform decision-making.
  • Assess and recommend deal structures and engagement strategies.
  • Work with businesses and functions to identify and progress divestment candidates and portfolio optimisation opportunities.
  • Have regular contact with external professionals who may be assisting bp in either project or option deliberation or execution (banks, financial advisors, etc.).
  • Maintain bp’s defence policy and playbook to support rapid bp ELT / Board decision making in defence scenarios.
  • Prepare materials in support of M&A’s agenda for the Group CFO, bp ELT, the Board and other relevant partners.
  • Act as the main point-of-contact for market intelligence, including information on listed companies, details of precedent transactions and general market context.
  • Maintain M&A’s team access to the relevant intelligence databases, including negotiating fees and renewals.
  • Support and (subject to performance) occasionally lead on individual M&A projects.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
