About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Lead Machine Learning Engineer to join our innovative R&D Lab. In this pivotal role, you will combine technical expertise, leadership capabilities, and strategic vision to drive the development and deployment of advanced machine learning solutions. You will be responsible for guiding a team of ML engineers, mentoring junior staff, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality, scalable, and maintainable AI systems. Your hands-on contributions will complement your leadership duties, allowing you to actively participate in complex projects while overseeing multiple initiatives simultaneously. You will play a critical role in shaping best practices, supporting solution design, and fostering a collaborative environment that promotes continuous improvement and innovation. Additionally, you will engage with stakeholders across the organization to identify use cases, support pre-sales activities, and communicate technical insights effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences. This role offers flexibility, with options for hybrid or remote working arrangements, aligning with modern work preferences.
Qualifications
Essential qualifications include a PhD or MSc in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Physics, or a related STEM discipline, or equivalent practical experience. Candidates should possess extensive experience in machine learning engineering, software engineering, or similar roles, with a proven track record of delivering production-grade ML systems and leading technical teams. A strong software engineering background is required, with experience in building and deploying data-driven systems in real-world environments. Demonstrated leadership in managing ML engineers or technical contributors within delivery-focused settings is essential. Experience supporting pre-sales activities, technical discovery, and opportunity shaping in collaboration with commercial teams is highly desirable. Candidates must have the ability to provide technical guidance across solution design, deployment, and ongoing maintenance, along with excellent communication skills to articulate technical decisions and risks clearly to diverse audiences. Familiarity with cloud platforms, CI/CD pipelines, containerization, and operational support for ML systems is also required. Desirable qualifications include experience with MLOps, establishing engineering best practices, working in regulated or complex environments, and promoting reuse of frameworks and tooling.

Responsibilities
- Lead, manage, and develop a team of ML engineers through coaching, mentoring, and performance evaluations, contributing to hiring, onboarding, and capability building within the ML engineering function.
- Maintain a significant hands-on role in technical delivery on key projects, ensuring high standards of quality and innovation while managing multiple initiatives concurrently.
- Collaborate with senior technical leaders to establish and embed best practices in ML engineering, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and excellence.
- Lead multidisciplinary teams comprising ML engineers, scientists, and software engineers, ensuring effective communication, collaboration, and delivery practices.
- Mentor junior engineers, supporting their technical growth and ensuring the development of ML engineering capabilities across the organization.
- Support solution design and provide technical leadership to ensure ML systems are robust, scalable, and maintainable, aligning with business objectives.
- Oversee the coordination, oversight, and quality assurance of multiple projects, proactively managing technical risks and escalating issues when necessary.
- Contribute directly to the delivery of complex or high-priority projects, providing technical expertise and hands-on support as required.
- Lead use case discovery sessions, collaborating with stakeholders to identify AI and ML opportunities aligned with business goals.
- Support pre-sales activities by providing technical insights, scoping, and solution shaping in partnership with the commercial team.
- Partner with project management teams to plan, scope, and support the successful delivery of ML projects.
- Ensure the ongoing maintenance, monitoring, and continuous improvement of deployed AI/ML solutions to maximize performance and reliability.
- Promote reuse of shared frameworks, tools, and standards across projects to enhance efficiency and consistency.
- Communicate complex technical decisions, risks, and trade-offs clearly to non-technical stakeholders, facilitating informed decision-making.
