Machine Learning Engineer — National Security & AI Safety
A hands-on engineering role bringing machine learning out of the lab and into production, on high-stakes missions. You'll build and deploy production-grade ML systems for clients across government and frontier AI labs — strengthening mission-critical national security and intelligence capabilities, and supporting AI safety red teaming and evaluation. The work sits at the intersection of transformative opportunity and complex risk, and the bar for security, trustworthiness and safety is high.
What you'll be doing
- Building and deploying production-grade ML software, tools and infrastructure
- Creating reusable, scalable solutions that accelerate delivery of ML systems
- Collaborating with engineers, data scientists and commercial leads to solve critical client challenges
- Leading technical scoping and architectural decisions to ensure project feasibility and impact
- Defining and implementing standards for deploying machine learning at scale
- Acting as technical advisor to customers and partners, translating complex ML concepts for non-technical stakeholders

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
