Machine Learning Engineer
Location: Newcastle (5 days onsite)
Salary: £40,000 - £120,000 depending on experience
We're supporting a rapidly growing defence technology consultancy as they continue to expand their engineering capability across AI, machine learning, and advanced software solutions.
They are looking for Machine Learning & LLM Engineers from graduate level through to technical leadership to work on complex projects where cutting-edge technology is applied to real-world defence and national security challenges.
This is an opportunity to work in a high-calibre engineering environment, solving technically challenging problems while helping shape the future of AI-enabled systems.

What you'll be working on:
- Developing and optimising machine learning models and AI systems
- Working with Large Language Models (LLMs) and transformer architectures
- Evaluating model performance and improving inference efficiency
- Applying machine learning techniques to complex datasets
- Exploring AI safety, explainability, and responsible AI practices
- Building solutions for secure, constrained, or specialist environments
What we're looking for:
- Strong understanding of machine learning fundamentals
- Knowledge of LLM principles and transformer architectures
- Strong mathematics and statistics foundation
- Experience with Python and ML frameworks
- Understanding of model evaluation and optimisation techniques
- Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly
- Experience with explainable AI, AI security, edge environments, or defence applications would be advantageous.
