About The Role
We are seeking an independent, dedicated Staff Machine Learning Engineer to join our Visual Computing Group (VCG). In this role, you will contribute to pioneering research and development efforts aimed at transforming gameplay and live streaming experiences through advanced neural network and machine learning technologies. The VCG’s mission is to design and deploy state-of-the-art neural networks and ML models that push the boundaries of graphics rendering, video processing, and streaming systems. Your work will focus on creating innovative solutions that improve visual quality, reduce latency, and enhance runtime efficiency for our gaming and streaming platforms. You will collaborate with a talented team of researchers and engineers, participate in publishing papers, and contribute to patent submissions, all while supporting the broader R&D initiatives within Sony Interactive Entertainment.
Qualifications
- PhD or MSc in Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Computer Graphics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Minimum of 7+ years of research and industry experience in machine learning, computer vision, or graphics processing.
- Proficiency in TensorFlow or PyTorch frameworks.
- Strong programming skills in Python, with experience in computer vision or graphics libraries and packages.
- Demonstrated development of advanced applications in image/video/graphics processing or computer vision.
- Evidence of leading technical developments through publications in top-tier conferences such as CVPR, ECCV, ICCV, SIGGRAPH, or similar.
- Solid understanding of neural network architectures, including designing and testing complex loss functions.
- Experience in designing and testing convolutional, recurrent, transformer-based, diffusion-based, or other neural network architectures.
- Experience in training, validating, and evaluating deep neural network models on large datasets using Python libraries like HDF5.
- Preferred: Publications in IEEE Transactions, NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, and experience with 3D engines such as Unreal or Unity.
- Knowledge of graphics pipeline concepts, including coordinate transformations, PBR materials, rasterization, lighting, and ray tracing.
- Experience in image processing techniques and practical implementation of related systems.

Responsibilities
- Develop and refine core generative models for graphics and video processing applicable to live streaming, game rendering, and related applications.
- Research and prototype innovative methods for graphics and video enhancement, including data generation pipelines from generative models.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to draft research publications and patent applications.
- Participate in core R&D projects, providing technical expertise and innovative solutions to advance Sony's gaming and streaming technologies.
- Contribute to the development of scalable, efficient neural network architectures tailored for real-time applications.
- Evaluate and optimize models for visual quality, latency, and runtime performance.
- Stay abreast of emerging trends and technologies in machine learning, computer vision, and graphics to inform ongoing research efforts.
- Support knowledge sharing and mentorship within the team to foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.
