About The Role
Waymo is seeking a talented and experienced Research Engineer to join its newly established London-based team within the DUE Machine Learning division. This role is integral to building and operating scalable machine learning and data systems, simulation workflows, and insight tools that enhance the evaluation and development of autonomous vehicle technology. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with teams in Oxford and MTV to develop foundational models and integrate them into various evaluation and training products. You will be part of a world-class research engineering team dedicated to advancing ultra-realistic autonomous vehicle simulations using cutting-edge foundation models. Your work will involve designing experiments that push the frontiers of simulation realism, developing metrics to evaluate these environments, and training large models to improve the accuracy and effectiveness of autonomous vehicle testing. This hybrid role reports to an Engineering Manager and offers the opportunity to contribute to innovative research that directly impacts the safety and performance of Waymo’s autonomous systems.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
