About The Role
The Machine Learning Engineer role at Vermelo RPO is a pivotal position within a forward-thinking team dedicated to advancing insurance risk modeling and pricing techniques. The successful candidate will be instrumental in developing, deploying, and maintaining automated machine learning pipelines that drive innovation and efficiency in insurance products. This position offers a unique opportunity to work with a leading insurance provider, Markerstudy Group, which commands a significant share of the UK insurance market, including private cars, commercial vehicles, and motorcycles. As part of this role, you will leverage your expertise to optimize machine learning models, implement robust deployment strategies, and contribute to the company's ongoing digital transformation efforts. The role is based in Manchester or Haywards Heath with a hybrid working model, offering flexibility and a dynamic work environment.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a strong educational background, preferably with a master's degree or higher in a STEM-related discipline such as Data Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, or Mathematics. Proven experience in deploying and tuning machine learning models in production environments is essential. Candidates should have hands-on experience with predictive modeling techniques such as Logistic Regression, Gradient Boosting Machines (GBMs), Elastic Net GLMs, GAMs, Decision Trees, Random Forests, Neural Networks, and Clustering methods. Familiarity with MLOps tools and cloud platforms like Azure ML, AWS, Google Cloud, or Databricks is highly desirable. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, PySpark, R, SAS, and SQL, along with experience using source control tools like GitHub, is required. Candidates should demonstrate excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and a strong aptitude for problem-solving and collaboration.

Responsibilities
- Collaborate with senior stakeholders, including the Head of Data Science and Machine Learning and the Director of Technical Underwriting, to understand business needs and translate them into technical solutions.
- Propose, develop, and implement innovative machine learning processes that automate manual tasks and enhance existing workflows, leveraging DevOps and MLOps practices.
- Work closely with data science teams to deploy state-of-the-art, robust, and scalable machine learning models that are future-proof and adaptable to evolving business requirements.
- Optimize machine learning models through tuning and validation to ensure maximum performance and reliability.
- Deploy and maintain machine learning solutions within the company's pipeline, adhering to test-driven development (TDD) principles and SOLID coding standards to guarantee high-quality code.
- Contribute to fostering a culture of data and coding excellence through best practices, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Implement efficient, scalable solutions across various markets including Private Motor, Commercial Vehicle, Bike, Taxi, and Home insurance segments.
- Mentor and guide junior machine learning engineers, sharing expertise and promoting a collaborative team environment.
