Machine Learning Research Scientist

Can we build robots that learn and generalise, rather than simply repeat what they've been trained to do?

I'm working with an early-stage UK robotics company tackling some of the hardest open problems in robot intelligence and embodied AI.

They're looking for a Machine Learning Research Scientist to develop new approaches to how robots learn, reason and adapt in complex, unpredictable environments.

The research spans Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models, world models, representation learning and robot learning, with a focus on moving beyond narrow, task-specific capabilities.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

Why it's interesting:

  • Research and develop novel VLA architectures and world models
  • Explore representation learning, generalisation and transfer across tasks and environments
  • Design and run large-scale learning experiments
  • Pursue new research directions, from first principles through to implementation
  • Validate research on real robotic systems, not just simulated environments or offline benchmarks
  • Help shape the research agenda and technical direction from an early stage
