Position Summary

Magellan Aerospace, Llay Wrexham has an exciting opportunity for Machining Technical Manager (Internal Only).

  • Full time permanent position
  • Job location: Llay, Wrexham, LL12 0PB.
  • Unionised site – works in partnership with Unite the Union.

The Machining Technical Manager is responsible for providing technical leadership, strategic direction and management of the machining and NC Programming function. The role will lead the development and implementation of machining strategies for existing products and New Product Introduction (NPI), ensuring that manufacturing processes are safe, capable, efficient and commercially competitive.

The position will manage and develop the NC Programming team, providing technical direction, prioritisation and support while developing the capability of engineers, apprentices and employees progressing from shop-floor roles into Engineering.

The role will act as the technical focal point for machining process development and continuous improvement, driving improvements in productivity, quality, cycle time, process capability and manufacturing efficiency. It will also be responsible for identifying, evaluating and introducing new machining technologies, CAM, programming, simulation and verification software to support the future development and competitiveness of the business.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and implementation of machining strategies for existing products and New Product Introduction
  • Provide technical leadership and direction for the machining and NC Programming function
  • Manage, lead and develop the NC Programming team, including workload allocation, prioritisation and technical support
  • Act as the primary technical escalation point for complex machining, NC programming and manufacturing process challenges
  • Develop and implement new machining, cutting and manufacturing strategies to improve productivity, quality, capability and cost
  • Work closely with tooling development, suppliers and other Engineering functions to optimise tooling and cutting solutions
  • Lead and support continuous improvement activities across machining and NC Programming
  • Identify opportunities to improve cycle times, machine utilisation, programming efficiency, process repeatability and manufacturing quality
  • Develop and maintain technical standards, best practice and governance within the NC Programming function
  • Support the development and introduction of robust and efficient manufacturing processes for NPI activities
  • Develop the technical capability of the NC Programming team through coaching, mentoring and structured development
  • Manage and support apprentices within the function
  • Develop and maintain pathways for suitable shop-floor employees to progress into Engineering roles
  • Support succession planning and the retention and transfer of critical technical knowledge
  • Evaluate new CAM, NC programming, simulation and verification software and technologies
  • Identify opportunities for automation, digital manufacturing and advanced machining technologies
  • Lead trials, evaluations and implementation of new technologies where there is a clear business benefit
  • Work collaboratively with Manufacturing Engineering, Tooling, Quality, Operation and other key stakeholders
  • Support the development of the longer-term machining technology and capability roadmap

Position Requirements

Essential Criteria:

  • GCSE or equivalent including Maths & English
  • Significant experience in NC Programming and CNC machining within a manufacturing environment
  • Strong technical knowledge of machining processes, cutting strategies, tooling and CNC manufacturing
  • Demonstrable experience of developing and optimising machining processes
  • Experience leading, supervising or providing technical direction to engineering personnel
  • Experience of CAM software and NC programming methodologies
  • Ability to analyse complex technical and manufacturing problems and develop effective solutions
  • Experience of driving process improvement and delivering measurable manufacturing benefits
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively across multiple Engineering and Operations functions
  • Strong organisational and prioritisation skills

Desirable Criteria:

  • HNC/HND, Degree or equivalent experience in Manufacturing, Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering
  • Experience within an aerospace or similarly regulated manufacturing environment
  • Experience supporting New Product Introduction and industrialisation activities
  • Experience with machining simulation and verification software
  • Knowledge of advanced machining technologies, automation or digital manufacturing
  • Experience developing apprentices, graduates or less experienced engineers
  • Formal leadership or management training
  • Knowledge of continuous improvement methodologies, such as Lean, Six Sigma or equivalent
  • Experience working with cutting tool and machine tool suppliers to develop manufacturing solutions
