The Macmillan Information Centre Assistant
The Macmillan Information Centre Assistant will provide personalised information, practical support, and signposting to people affected by cancer, empowering them to navigate health and social care services and make informed decisions about their care and wellbeing. Working within an agreed scope of competence, the post holder will respond to information and support needs, recognising and escalating complex issues to appropriate professionals where required.
The post holder will contribute to the delivery of a high-quality, person-centred information and support service, ensuring a welcoming, accessible, and supportive environment for patients, families, carers, and visitors. They will supervise and support volunteers, promoting excellent standards of service delivery and helping to ensure the efficient day-to-day operation of the Macmillan Information Centres at RDH and QHB.

Key Responsibilities
- Meet with people affected by cancer, including patients, carers, relatives, and healthcare professionals, to provide high-quality information, support, and signposting to services.
- Provide information and support within the remit of the role, recognising when needs are complex and require referral or escalation to appropriate clinical or specialist services.
- Refer individuals to welfare benefits advice services and local initiatives that offer financial support and cost-saving opportunities.
- Liaise effectively with a range of healthcare professionals and community services, to ensure coordinated patient support.
- Promote the Macmillan Information and Support Service through outreach activities, awareness events, and engagement within hospital and community settings.
- Coordinate the day-to-day operation of the Macmillan Information Centre, ensuring a welcoming, accessible, and responsive service for all users.
- Supervise, support, and guide volunteers, ensuring they are appropriately trained, supported, and deployed to meet service needs.
- Contribute to the ongoing delivery and development of a Trust-wide cancer information and support service, identifying opportunities to improve patient experience and access to support.
- Work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, including undertaking periods of lone working in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.
