Role Overview
Take real technical ownership of live ecommerce platforms, shaping solutions from discovery through to delivery. Work on complex, high-traffic Magento 2 and Adobe Commerce platforms for established brands. Tackle varied backend challenges across integrations, payments, performance, scalability and platform upgrades.
About the Role
We’re recruiting a Senior Backend Developer for a UK-based ecommerce specialist. You’ll own technical work across live Magento 2 and Adobe Commerce platforms, solving complex problems and delivering improvements that make a genuine difference.
What Experience You’ll Need to Apply
- Commercial Magento 2 backend development experience on production ecommerce platforms.
- Recent experience within a digital agency, software house or fast-paced multi-client environment.
- In-depth knowledge of Magento 2 architecture, including custom modules, Dependency Injection, plugins and observers.
- Experience with REST or GraphQL APIs, service contracts and third-party integrations.
- Hands-on checkout and payment experience, including PSP integrations and custom checkout functionality.
- Strong PHP and MySQL skills, with experience across Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce.
- Knowledge of Composer, Redis, caching, message queues and Magento performance optimisation.
- Experience with Git, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing and production deployments.
- Ability to explain technical decisions clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Exposure to ERP, PIM, CRM, ecommerce security, Playwright or Cypress would be beneficial.

What You’ll Be Doing
You’ll work across a portfolio of established ecommerce platforms, covering ongoing development, support, upgrades, integrations and platform improvements. A core part of the role will include investigating requirements and technical issues, identifying root causes and turning them into practical, maintainable solutions.
You’ll build and extend Magento 2 and Adobe Commerce functionality, including custom modules, APIs, checkout functionality and integrations with ERP, CRM and PIM platforms, payment providers, shipping services and marketing tools. You’ll also work on deployments, Magento upgrades, migrations and performance optimisation. A key part of the role is taking ownership of complex production issues. You’ll troubleshoot across development, staging and production environments, carry out root cause analysis and identify ways to improve performance, reduce technical debt and prevent recurring problems.

You’ll work closely with Project Managers, Product Owners, QA specialists, Solution Specialists and client stakeholders. You’ll contribute to technical discovery, estimates and solution planning, while helping maintain high standards around code quality, testing, security and maintainability.

This is a remote-first UK position offering flexibility over where you work, alongside flexible hours outside core hours of 10am-4pm. There’s a competitive salary (£55K-70K) and benefits include 26 days’ holiday plus bank holidays, a £75 monthly Heka benefits allowance, a company-wide quarterly bonus scheme, a 3% employer pension contribution and an enhanced maternity package. You’ll also have the opportunity to broaden your technical knowledge while working with complex, high-traffic ecommerce platforms.
