The salary scale for a Band 3 has been adjusted as part of the NHS Agenda for Change pay award for 2026/2027 and will be implemented in August 2026 backdated to 01 April 2026 where applicable.
Job Overview
Aneurin Bevan University Health Board is recruiting a Maintenance Assistant (Band 3) to join our Estates teams at Grange University Hospital, Cwmbran.
This hands-on role helps ensure our buildings, equipment and environments remain safe, compliant and welcoming for patients, visitors and staff.
This post requires multi-trade experience and involves completing planned and reactive maintenance, statutory checks and minor repairs.
Main duties of the job
As a Maintenance Assistant, You Will Undertake a Wide Range Of Maintenance Work Across Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing And Building Fabric Areas. You Will
- Complete reactive and planned maintenance
- Undertake statutory compliance tasks (e.g., water testing, boiler checks, safety systems)
- Diagnose faults and carry out minor repairs
- Use electronic systems to manage and update work orders
- Support apprentices and junior staff
- Work independently across multiple sites
- Participate in on-call rotas where required
This role suits someone with proven multi-trade experience who can work flexibly, respond to urgent requests and maintain high safety standards.

Qualifications And Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Basic education to GCSE/’O’ Level in Maths and English or post-Secondary Education training in relevant field.
- Knowledge of a range of procedures for Building and repair of Mechanical / Electrical equipment / Boiler Equipment.
- An equivalent vocational qualification at Level 3 or equivalent demonstrable level of knowledge and Experience i.e. shows ability to carry out more complex tasks, often with some autonomy and decision-making.
- Knowledge of Health & Safety at Work Act.
Desirable criteria
- Served a recognised apprenticeship in a trade or building multi-trades operations
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of working within multi trades.
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working on a wide range of mechanical, electrical and building services, plant and equipment maintenance environment e.g. work at heights, PAT testing, Boiler plant maintenance, water testing or macerators.
- Previous experience of working in an acute hospital environment or similar demanding role.
Skills and Attributes
Essential criteria
- Good communication skills both written and verbal with ability to communicate at all levels to demonstrate tact and diplomacy.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Work unsupervised and be flexible to meet the needs of the service across sites within area of expertise.
- Ability to prioritise, plan and work to agreed deadlines, demonstrate organisation skills.
- Welsh Language Skills are desirable levels 1 to 5 in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing in Welsh.
Other
Essential criteria
- Ability to travel within geographical area and have relevant driving licence to drive health board vehicles.
- Able to work flexibly and at times work outside normal hours.
- Participate in On-Call rota for area of expertise if/ as required to ensure services are constant.
