Maintenance Engineer – Assistant/Mechanical/Plumbing
Location: The Balfour Hospital - Foreland Road, Kirkwall, KW15 1NZ
Contract - Full-time, Permanent

Your new role
What you'll do:
- Provide hands-on support to the maintenance team with repairs, servicing, and general upkeep of building facilities and systems, including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and HVAC tasks.
- Conduct regular inspections of facilities to identify maintenance needs, report issues promptly, and assist in prioritizing repairs to ensure a safe and functional environment.
- Carry out maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs, fixing leaks, clearing drains, and other minor repairs as needed.
- Assist in the operation, maintenance, and transportation of tools, materials, and equipment necessary for various maintenance tasks.
- Follow safety protocols and guidelines to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations in all maintenance activities.
- Use a mobile device for job tracking, completing work orders and reporting maintenance issues via an online system.
- Participate in an on-call rotation to respond to emergency maintenance issues outside of regular working hours, ensuring timely resolution of urgent problems

What you'll need:
- Previous experience in a maintenance, facilities, or handyman role, preferably within a healthcare or commercial setting.
- Knowledge of either plumbing, electrical, mechanical and general building maintenance.
- Good verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to report issues clearly and effectively.
- Proficiency in using mobile devices, including familiarity with mobile apps and basic data entry.
- Ability to manage time effectively, work independently, and handle multiple tasks across various sites.
- Ability to identify maintenance issues and ensure high standards of work and safety.
- Willingness to travel between sites and adapt to changing priorities and tasks.
- Full UK Driving Licence
- The successful candidate will require a PVG/Disclosure Check before starting in the job.
Who we’re looking for:
We are seeking a reliable and proactive Maintenance Engineer – We will review engineers of most trade disciplines including mechanical, plumbing or semi-skilled engineers to join our site-based maintenance team. The role involves supporting the maintenance team in ensuring the safe, efficient, and effective upkeep of The Balfour Hospital based in Kirkwall Orkney. The successful candidate will use mobile devices for job reporting and may be required to participate in an on-call rotation to handle maintenance issues.
