Multi Skilled Shift Maintenance Engineer (Shifts)

Scope of Job

Reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor, you will be responsible for maintaining plant, machinery, building services, and facilities to ensure the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of the manufacturing site. You will support continuous improvement initiatives, minimize downtime, and ensure all work is completed in line with health, safety, and environmental standards.

Shift Pattern: double day shift (early shift Monday to Thursday 6am-1pm & Friday 6am-2pm, late shift Monday to Thursday 1pm-10pm), with night shifts when required depending on production demands.

Responsibilities

Maintenance & Reliability

  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) activities on plant and equipment.
  • Diagnose and resolve mechanical and electrical faults to minimize production downtime.
  • Identify recurring issues and recommend permanent corrective actions.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records and update CMMS systems where applicable.
  • Support equipment installation, modification, and commissioning activities.

Facilities & Utilities

  • Maintain site services including boilers, compressors, chillers, free coolers, fire protection systems, and lighting.
  • Conduct routine inspections and testing of critical safety systems.
  • Support general building maintenance activities as required.
  • Monitor and maintain the site effluent treatment system.

Health & Safety

  • Work in accordance with company health, safety, and environmental procedures.
  • Participate in risk assessments, permit-to-work activities, and safe systems of work.
  • Ensure contractors comply with site health and safety standards.

Continuous Improvement

  • Support lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Contribute to TPM, 5S, and asset reliability projects.
  • Assist in identifying opportunities to improve equipment efficiency and reduce waste.

Measures of Success

  • Zero Lost Time Incidents (LTIs).
  • Achievement of maintenance KPIs, including uptime, response times, and planned maintenance completion.
  • Reduction in equipment downtime and repeat failures.
  • Compliance with statutory inspections and maintenance schedules.
  • Positive contribution to continuous improvement and cost-saving initiatives.
  • Maintenance of high housekeeping standards (5S/6S).
  • Liaising with Departmental Managers, Departmental personnel, and machine crews.
  • Liaising with external suppliers.

Connecting With Others

Essential

  • Recognised engineering apprenticeship.
  • NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, or equivalent qualification in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Qualified and competent to undertake electrical maintenance activities.

Desirable

  • 18th Edition Wiring Regulations.
  • IOSH Working Safely or equivalent.
  • COMPEX, IPAF, and Forklift licences.

Experience & Skills

Essential

  • Experience working within a manufacturing or production environment.
  • Multi-skilled maintenance capability covering electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Fault-finding experience on production equipment.
  • Understanding of pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
  • Ability to interpret electrical schematics and engineering drawings.
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance systems.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills.

Desirable

  • PLC fault-finding and diagnostics.
  • Welding and fabrication experience.
  • Manual machining experience.
  • Experience with continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Experience using computerised maintenance management systems (CMMS).
