I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
The role is predominantly mechanically biased, although you'll need enough electrical fault-finding ability to be comfortable working across modern production equipment.
You'll be joining a genuinely stable engineering team led by an outstanding Engineering Manager who believes in developing people rather than simply managing them.
What you'll be doing
- Leading and supporting a team of Maintenance Engineers during your shift.
- Carrying out planned preventative maintenance across a fast-paced manufacturing site.
- Responding to breakdowns and diagnosing faults quickly to minimise downtime.
- Supporting continuous improvement and reliability projects.
- Driving engineering standards, safety and best practice.
- Coaching and mentoring less experienced engineers.
What we're looking for
- Previous experience as a Senior Maintenance Engineer, Shift Engineer, Lead Engineer or Engineering Team Leader.
- Strong mechanical engineering skills with basic electrical fault-finding ability.
- Experience working within a manufacturing, FMCG, food, packaging, automotive or similar production environment.
- Someone who enjoys leading by example rather than managing from the office.
- Engineering qualifications (Apprenticeship, NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds or equivalent).
