Job Purpose

The Mechanical Apprentice supports the maintenance and production teams by learning and applying mechanical engineering principles to install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair assembly production machinery and equipment. The role combines practical, hands-on experience with structured training to develop the knowledge and skills required to become a qualified mechanical engineer or maintenance technician.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the installation, maintenance, servicing, and repair of mechanical equipment and production machinery.
  • Support planned preventative maintenance (PPM) activities to minimise equipment downtime.
  • Help diagnose mechanical faults and assist with repairs under supervision.
  • Learn to read and interpret engineering drawings, technical manuals, and maintenance documentation.
  • Assist in assembling, dismantling, and testing mechanical components and systems.
  • Use hand tools, power tools, and measuring equipment safely and correctly.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records and complete job documentation.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to improve equipment reliability and production efficiency.
  • Keep the workshop clean, organised, and compliant with company housekeeping and 5S standards.
  • Follow all company Health, Safety, and Environmental policies and procedures, ensuring safe working practices are maintained at all times.
  • Participate fully in apprenticeship training, attending college or external training providers as required.
  • Work collaboratively with production, maintenance, and engineering teams.

Experience Required

  • Interest in mechanical engineering and manufacturing.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical principles is desirable.
  • Good problem-solving and practical skills.
  • Willingness to learn and follow instructions.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work independently once trained.
  • Good attention to detail.
  • Basic IT skills for recording maintenance activities.
  • Must be able to work well in a close team.
