Maintenance Officer

About The Role

We are looking for an enthusiastic maintenance officer to deliver a comprehensive programme of maintenance, repairs and building support services across West Northamptonshire Council’s corporate properties.

This includes reactive, compliance and planned maintenance activities, ranging from general repairs and building inspections to minor works such as decorating, plumbing repairs and facilities maintenance, ensuring council buildings remain safe, secure, compliant, warm and fit for purpose.

This position operates on a fixed working pattern of 10:00am to 6:00pm Monday to Thursday and 10:00am to 5:30pm on Friday.

What will you be doing?

The role will be responsible for carrying out general maintenance activities and monitoring building systems across the corporate estate, including heating, lighting, drainage, guttering and mechanical installations. The postholder will undertake both scheduled and reactive maintenance works where appropriate, helping to reduce reliance on external contractors and ensuring council buildings remain operational and well maintained.

You will conduct regular internal and external inspections of corporate buildings, including roof inspections, identifying defects in the building fabric, fixtures, fittings and furniture, as well as any issues affecting mechanical or electrical systems. Following assessment, you will prioritise repairs, complete works where possible, or coordinate action through the Property Response Desk to minimise disruption and ensure buildings remain safe, secure, dry, warm and fit for purpose.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
