Maintenance Operative Driver

An opportunity has arisen within our Estates & Facilities section for a Maintenance Operative Driver, to cover various stations within South Yorkshire.

Maintenance Operative / Driver (MOD)

  • Location: Covering various sites within South Yorkshire
  • Hours: Full Time – 37 Hours per week (Flexi Time)
  • Work Pattern: 8.30am-4.30pm Monday-Thursday, 8.30am-4pm Friday
  • Contract: Permanent
  • Salary: £25,949 per annum (Grade 2) *To increase subject to national pay award negotiations for 2026.

The overall purpose of the role is to support the safe and effective running of Fire Service premises by carrying out basic maintenance, porterage, caretaking and driving duties across South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue sites.

This is a varied and responsive role where no two days are the same, requiring the postholder to think on their feet, communicate regularly with the Helpdesk and stations, prioritise jobs, and adapt quickly to changing operational needs, including supporting incidents with refreshments, welfare supplies and operational items when required.

To be considered for this role you will have previous experience of:

  • Basic DIY
  • Understanding of Health & Safety in relation to the workplace
  • Experience in the provision of a general porterage service
  • Experience of providing excellent customer service.

The Successful Person, As a Minimum, Must

  • Possess a current full driving license
  • Have basic DIY skills and knowledge
  • Work according to Health and Safety regulations in relation to the workplace
  • Be able to work out of hours to provide cover where necessary.

The Key Duties Will Include The Following

  • Carrying out basic maintenance, minor repairs, routine cleaning and grounds-related tasks across Fire Service premises, ensuring work is completed safely and to an appropriate standard.
  • Providing a responsive porterage and driving service, including collecting and delivering mail, equipment, operational items and other goods between stations and Service locations as required.
  • Communicating regularly with the Helpdesk, stations and relevant departments to prioritise jobs, update progress, close completed tasks promptly and escalate urgent issues where needed.
  • Supporting operational needs and extreme circumstances, including delivering welfare supplies, refreshments and operational items to incidents or locations at short notice.
  • Undertaking routine safety, security and compliance checks once trained, including fire alarm tests, fire door inspections, water hygiene checks, plant room checks, van checks and contractor support.

New starters will commence on the bottom of the salary grade and will receive increases to the top of the grade on an incremental basis. We offer 28 days annual leave (pro-rata) plus Bank Holidays. Annual leave increases after 5 years’ service to 32 days, followed by an extra day a year up to a maximum of 37 days. We also operate a generous flexi time attendance scheme.

Most of our corporate roles offer flexi time and agile working, meaning people can vary their hours to suit their commitments outside of work as agreed with their line manager. Flexi time can be accrued with a potential of up to 13 days to be taken within a year.

All eligible corporate staff are auto-enrolled onto the Local Government Pension Scheme with personal contributions ranging from 5.5% to 12.5%. It is a defined benefit pension scheme that means pensions are based on salary and the length of paying into the scheme. 1/49th of your pensionable salary is added to your pot per year plus cost of living adjustments.
