Department: Restaurant Operations
Reports To: General Manager / Designated Restaurant Leader
Employment Status: Full-Time or Part-Time
Location: Assigned McDonald’s Restaurant
Position Summary
The Maintenance Person plays an important role in maintaining a clean, safe, functional, and well-maintained McDonald’s restaurant. This position is responsible for completing routine cleaning, preventive maintenance, minor repairs, equipment care, and exterior maintenance while supporting the overall needs of restaurant operations.
The Maintenance Person is expected to take ownership of the physical condition of the restaurant, identify maintenance or safety concerns before they become larger problems, and communicate repair needs promptly to restaurant leadership.
This is a hands-on position requiring reliability, attention to detail, organization, and the ability to work independently while remaining part of the restaurant team.
PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
Successful Maintenance Persons Are Expected To Demonstrate
- Ownership: Treat the restaurant, equipment, and grounds as if they were their own and proactively address concerns.
- Reliability: Arrive as scheduled, complete assigned responsibilities, and communicate concerns promptly.
- Attention to Detail: Identify cleanliness, maintenance, and safety concerns that others may overlook.
- Planning: Prioritize routine maintenance while responding appropriately to immediate restaurant needs.
- Communication: Keep restaurant leadership informed of equipment concerns, needed repairs, supply needs, and completed work.
- Safety: Complete work using approved procedures, proper equipment, and required safety precautions.
- Cleanliness: Maintain a consistently clean and organized restaurant environment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position operates in an active restaurant environment. The Maintenance Person may work around hot equipment, cold storage areas, wet floors, cleaning chemicals, moving equipment, noise, and outdoor weather conditions.
Employees are expected to follow all applicable safety procedures and use required protective equipment.
Training Requirements
Maintenance Persons are expected to successfully complete all assigned company and restaurant training, which may include:
- Safe & Respectful Workplace training
- Workplace Violence Prevention training
- Safety & Security training
- Food Safety training
- Chemical Safety
- Equipment-specific training
- Preventive Maintenance procedures
- Lockout/Tagout training when applicable
- Additional McDonald’s or organization-required training
Employees may only perform maintenance activities for which they have been appropriately trained and authorized.

SCHEDULING
Maintenance schedules are established based on the operational and maintenance needs of the restaurant. Early morning, daytime, evening, weekend, or occasional off-hour work may be required depending on restaurant needs and scheduled maintenance activities.

Essential Duties
Restaurant Cleanliness
- Maintain cleanliness of assigned interior and exterior areas of the restaurant.
- Complete detailed cleaning of floors, walls, ceilings, vents, windows, doors, baseboards, storage areas, and other assigned areas.
- Maintain restrooms to company cleanliness and sanitation standards.
- Clean and maintain parking lots, sidewalks, curbs, drive-thru areas, dumpster areas, and restaurant grounds.
- Remove trash and maintain waste and recycling areas.
- Complete scheduled deep-cleaning projects.
- Assist restaurant leadership in maintaining an organized and clutter-free restaurant.
Preventive Maintenance
- Complete assigned daily, weekly, monthly, and periodic preventive maintenance tasks.
- Inspect restaurant equipment and building components for signs of wear, damage, leaks, or other concerns.
- Clean and maintain equipment according to approved procedures and manufacturer requirements.
- Maintain equipment filters and other routine maintenance items as assigned.
- Assist with maintaining plumbing fixtures, drains, lighting, doors, hardware, shelving, and other restaurant components within the scope of the position.
- Document completed preventive maintenance activities when required.
Equipment & Restaurant Care
- Help ensure restaurant equipment remains clean and in good working condition.
- Identify equipment that is damaged, malfunctioning, or showing signs of potential failure.
- Immediately communicate significant equipment concerns to restaurant leadership.
- Complete minor repairs when trained and authorized to do so.
- Assist authorized service technicians by providing access to equipment and communicating known issues when directed by restaurant leadership.
- Protect restaurant equipment and property from unnecessary damage through proper handling and maintenance.
Safety & Security
- Follow all company safety, security, food safety, and workplace procedures.
- Use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when required.
- Follow proper chemical handling, storage, and labeling procedures.
- Follow Lockout/Tagout requirements when applicable and only perform tasks for which proper training and authorization have been provided.
- Immediately report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, electrical concerns, leaks, trip hazards, or other potential hazards.
- Maintain clear and safe walkways, exits, storage areas, and workspaces.
- Follow proper ladder and equipment-use procedures.
- Never perform electrical, HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing, or other specialized work requiring certification or authorization unless appropriately qualified and specifically authorized.

Exterior & Seasonal Maintenance
- Maintain the appearance and cleanliness of restaurant grounds.
- Pick up litter and debris from parking lots, landscaped areas, drive-thru lanes, and sidewalks.
- Assist with seasonal maintenance needs.
- Assist with snow and ice removal when applicable.
- Maintain exterior trash receptacles and dumpster areas.
- Identify concerns involving exterior lighting, signage, pavement, landscaping, doors, or building conditions and communicate them to leadership.
Operational Support
- Work cooperatively with restaurant management and crew.
- Schedule maintenance activities, when possible, to minimize disruption to restaurant operations and guests.
- Respond appropriately to urgent cleaning, equipment, or facility needs.
- Maintain maintenance tools, supplies, chemicals, and storage areas in an organized and safe condition.
- Assist with deliveries, organization, cleaning, and other restaurant support activities as assigned.
- May perform other restaurant duties based on business needs and appropriate training.
Qualifications
- Previous maintenance, janitorial, facilities, construction, mechanical, or restaurant experience is preferred but not required.
- Ability to learn and follow preventive maintenance procedures.
- Basic mechanical aptitude is preferred.
- Ability to identify potential equipment or facility problems and communicate them effectively.
- Ability to work independently and manage assigned responsibilities.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Dependable attendance and punctuality.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to work respectfully and professionally with employees, managers, vendors, and guests.
Physical Requirements
The Maintenance Person must be able to perform the physical responsibilities associated with restaurant maintenance, including:
- Standing and walking for extended periods.
- Frequently bending, reaching, twisting, kneeling, crouching, and climbing.
- Using ladders or step stools in accordance with company safety procedures.
- Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling items associated with maintenance and restaurant operations.
- Working around restaurant equipment and in varying temperatures.
- Working indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Safely handling cleaning products and chemicals according to required procedures.
