About the role
This is a core accounting role sitting within one of our Financial Accounting sub-teams. The Management Accountant works under the direction of a Senior Accountant or Financial Controller, taking ownership of a defined set of close tasks — including journals, accruals, reconciliations and reporting schedules — while developing the technical accounting knowledge and professional skills needed to progress toward Senior Accountant level.
What you’ll be doing
Month-End Journals & Accruals
- Prepare and post month-end journals for your assigned area — including accruals, prepayments and any standard reclassifications — ensuring all entries are accurately calculated, supported by clear evidence and posted within the close timetable.
- Review operational data and invoices to identify accruals requirements for your area — flagging any unusual or material items to the Senior Accountant or Financial Controller promptly.
- Maintain clear, well-organised working papers for all journals posted — ensuring your entries can be easily reviewed, understood and recreated by others.
- Contribute to the efficient running of the month-end close — completing your assigned tasks on time and communicating proactively if you are at risk of missing a deadline.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Balance Sheet Reconciliations
- Prepare and maintain balance sheet reconciliations for accounts within your assigned scope — ensuring all accounts are reconciled to timetable and all reconciling items are clearly documented and investigated.
- Escalate aged or unresolved reconciling items to the Senior Accountant or Financial Controller, providing a clear summary of the issue and the steps taken to resolve it.
- Maintain a tidy, audit-ready reconciliation pack for your assigned accounts — updating it on a monthly basis and ensuring supporting documentation is well-organised and readily accessible.
Management Reporting
- Prepare reporting schedules and analysis for your assigned area — including cost centre summaries, entity-level reports and any other regular outputs required by the Senior Accountant or Financial Controller.
- Provide straightforward variance commentary for your area — explaining movements in your numbers against budget, forecast and prior period in a clear, concise way.
- Assist the Senior Accountant or Financial Controller in compiling sections of the management accounts pack — ensuring your inputs are accurate, clearly presented and submitted on time.
Accounts Payable & Receivable Support
- Liaise with the Transactional Finance team to ensure that supplier invoices, cash receipts and payment runs relevant to your area are correctly coded, processed and reflected in the ledger.
- Investigate and resolve any discrepancies between ledger entries and supporting documentation — escalating items that require commercial or operational input to resolve.
Audit & Controls Support
- Support the preparation of audit schedules and working papers for your assigned area — ensuring all items are well-evidenced, clearly presented and available to the Senior Accountant or Financial Controller ahead of audit fieldwork.
- Maintain the integrity of your area of the ledger throughout the year — keeping reconciliations current, ensuring working papers are up to date and flagging any control weaknesses or unusual items to the Senior Accountant promptly.
What we need from you
We’re looking for people who are ready for a fast-paced environment, get their kicks out of problem solving and can balance getting today's stuff done, whilst building for the future. We’re looking for people with drive and natural curiosity – who want to do things differently. And do them brilliantly.
