I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Who We Are Looking For:
We don't expect you to have mastered every single revenue stream yet, but you must be ready to step beyond pure transactional accounting.
Management Accounts Capability:
- You are either recently qualified (ACCA/CIMA) or close to reaching that level, with practical exposure to pulling together management accounts.
Core Technical Understanding:
- You have a solid, confident grip on core month-end mechanics—accruals, prepayments, fixed asset registers, and control account reconciliations—and critically, the proven ability to bring these together into a full P&L and Balance Sheet.
Hit-the-Ground-Running Mindset:
- Pragmatic, proactive, and analytical. You are ready to roll up your sleeves, handle the core month-end process independently, and adapt to a fast-moving environment.
The Role & Unrivalled Exposure:
Working directly with the Financial Controller, you will take ownership of wider core reporting while supporting our expanding global operations:
Management Reporting:
- Prepare the monthly Group Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet reports. Maintain prepayment/accrual schedules, fixed asset registers, and intercompany reconciliations.
Control & Reconciliations:
- Perform full control account reconciliations and oversee merchant/bank reconciliations across multiple international currencies in Xero.
