Management Accountant
Location: Basildon, Essex / Hybrid
Industry: Retail
Salary: £38,000–£48,000 depending on experience and qualification level
Reports to: Financial Controller / Finance Manager
The Role
We are looking for a commercially minded Management Accountant to join our finance team within a fast-paced, high-volume retail environment.
This is a hands-on role and would suit someone who is comfortable getting involved in the detail, taking ownership of core management accounting processes, and working closely with the wider business.
This is an excellent opportunity to join a financially stable and well-established business with strong growth prospects and an exciting future ahead. As the company continues to develop, this role will play an important part in supporting financial control, commercial decision-making, and business performance.
This is a varied role combining monthly management accounting, financial analysis, budgeting, and forecasting with commercial business partnering. You will work closely with finance, operations, and store management teams to provide accurate reporting, meaningful insight, and recommendations that support business performance.
The successful candidate will be analytical, proactive, and comfortable working across multiple locations and cost centres.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare monthly management accounts, including P&L, balance sheet, and cashflow reporting.
- Produce variance analysis covering actual versus budget, prior year, and trading trends.
- Prepare and maintain accruals, prepayments, intercompany, and fixed asset journals.
- Complete monthly balance sheet reconciliations and maintain strong financial controls.
- Produce weekly sales, margin, and KPI reporting for senior management.
- Support stock accounting, shrinkage analysis, cost-of-sales accuracy, and margin reporting.
- Prepare clear financial commentary highlighting key business drivers, risks, and opportunities.
- Work closely with operational teams to analyse store and cost-centre performance.
- Support annual budgets, quarterly forecasts, and cashflow planning.
- Develop forecasting models for sales, margins, and overheads.
- Provide commercial analysis on pricing, promotions, and category performance.
- Support financial business cases for new stores, refurbishments, and operational investments.
- Monitor cost-saving initiatives and track financial benefits.
- Support internal and external audit requirements.
- Identify opportunities to improve reporting processes, data quality, and automation.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
