About LSG

LSG is a rapidly growing construction and civil engineering business delivering major structural, groundworks and infrastructure projects across the UK and Europe.

Originally established in the UK, the business has grown significantly and now has operations in the UK, Portugal and Italy, working on large-scale and technically demanding projects for major clients.

We are an ambitious, entrepreneurial and commercially focused business with a relatively lean management structure. Our continued growth and international expansion mean that the business is constantly evolving, creating a varied and fast-paced working environment where people are given genuine responsibility and the opportunity to make an impact.

As the Group continues to grow, we are strengthening our finance function to support the next stage of development. We are looking for people who enjoy taking ownership, solving problems and working closely with both operational and commercial teams, rather than operating within a narrowly defined accounting role.

The Role

We are looking for an experienced, hands-on Management Accountant to take day-to-day ownership of the finance and accounting function for our Portuguese business.

This is a broad accounting role covering management reporting, transactional finance, reconciliations, credit control, compliance coordination and liaison with our external Portuguese accountants.

Portuguese statutory accounting, tax and regulatory filings are supported by external accountants. The Management Accountant will, however, retain internal ownership of the company's financial information and will be responsible for ensuring that our internal accounting records are complete, accurate and reconciled to the records maintained by our Portuguese advisers.

The position reports to the Head of Finance, who will provide oversight and review. The successful candidate will be expected to proactively manage the accounting function and resolve issues directly with operational teams, customers, suppliers and external accountants.

Key Responsibilities

Management Accounts & Month-End

  • Take ownership of the monthly accounting cycle and internal month-end close for Portugal.
  • Prepare monthly management accounts, including P&L, Balance Sheet and supporting schedules.
  • Complete regular bank reconciliations across all Portuguese bank accounts
  • Prepare and post accruals, prepayments and other month-end adjustments.
  • Complete monthly Balance Sheet reconciliations and investigate outstanding items.
  • Review project revenue, costs, margins and accruals.
  • Prepare overhead and project reporting.
  • Maintain and reconcile intercompany balances with other group entities.
  • Assist with cashflow forecasting, budgeting and financial planning.
  • Provide financial analysis and reporting to the Head of Finance and directors.

Internal & External Accounting Reconciliation

  • Reconcile the company's internal accounting/ERP system to the accounting records and trial balance maintained by the Portuguese accountants.
  • Investigate and resolve differences between internal and external accounting records.
  • Maintain a clear reconciliation between statutory accounting records and internal management reporting.
  • Review accounting information received from the Portuguese accountants for accuracy and completeness.
  • Proactively follow up missing information, incorrect postings and unexplained balances.
  • Ensure adjustments identified internally are appropriately reflected in the external accounting records where required.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Experience & Skills

Essential

  • Experience in a Management Accountant, Company Accountant or similarly broad finance role.
  • Strong management accounts and month-end experience.
  • Excellent Balance Sheet reconciliation skills.
  • Hands-on experience with sales ledger, purchase ledger and credit control.
  • Good understanding of VAT and payroll accounting.
  • Ability to reconcile information held across different accounting systems.
  • Ability to investigate discrepancies independently and follow issues through to resolution.
  • Comfortable dealing directly with external accountants and advisers.
  • Willingness to remain hands-on with transactional accounting when required.
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to manage competing deadlines.
  • Proactive approach and ability to take ownership without requiring close day-to-day supervision.

Desirable

  • Portuguese language skills.
  • Experience working with Portuguese accounting records or within a Portuguese finance environment.
  • Construction, civil engineering or project accounting experience.
  • Experience working within a growing owner-managed business.
  • Experience with intercompany accounting and multi-entity groups.
  • Experience with ERP or construction accounting systems.
  • Part-qualified, qualified or qualified by experience in an appropriate accounting qualification.

The Person

We are looking for someone who will take genuine ownership of the accounting side of the Portuguese business.

This is not a role where information is simply passed between the company and its external accountants. The successful candidate will be expected to understand the numbers, challenge discrepancies, ensure the different accounting records reconcile and proactively follow issues through to resolution.

You should be equally comfortable preparing management accounts, reconciling the external accountant's trial balance, raising a customer invoice, chasing an overdue balance, reviewing a supplier invoice or dealing with an unexpected request from management.

The business is fast-moving and priorities can change quickly. You will therefore need to be practical, organised and comfortable dealing with urgent and ad-hoc requirements without losing control of core accounting and compliance deadlines.

The Head of Finance will provide oversight and support, but the expectation is that you will independently manage the day-to-day accounting function for Portugal.
