Job Description:
Your Work Shapes the World at Caterpillar Inc.
When you join Caterpillar, you're joining a global team who cares not just about the work we do – but also about each other. We are the makers, problem solvers, and future world builders who are creating stronger, more sustainable communities. We don't just talk about progress and innovation here – we make it happen, with our customers, where we work and live. Together, we are building a better world, so we can all enjoy living in it.
About the Role
If you're energized by sitting at the intersection of government, industry, and one of the world's most iconic manufacturing brands, this is a role worth exploring. As our UK Government Affairs Advisor, you'll be the trusted bridge between Caterpillar and the people who write the rules – government officials, policymakers, regulators, and industry leaders across the UK. You'll monitor the political and regulatory landscape, spot risks and opportunities early, and translate them into clear insights for senior business leaders.
What You Will Do
- Build and manage trusted, long-term relationships with government and regional authorities, industry bodies, business and trade associations.
- Help shape and execute Caterpillar’s UK government affairs strategy creating the public policy environment that supports Caterpillar’s objectives, dealer and customer success.
- Monitor and analyse regulatory and legislative developments across a wide range of policy matters that could impact Caterpillar, our customers, and dealers.
- Gather deep insights into current and emerging policy trends, identifying external challenges and opportunities and converting these into clear, actionable intelligence for business leaders, partnering with subject matter experts to assess impact and develop clear policy positions and messaging.
- Engage externally representing Caterpillar’s interests in meetings with government institutions, industry bodies, and other external stakeholders to promote a supportive and competitive UK policy environment.
- Prepare briefings, policy summaries, stakeholder maps, consultation responses, position papers, and executive-level materials – explaining complex policy and technical subjects in clear, audience-tailored language.
- Build alignment across legal, compliance, communications, sustainability, commercial, and operational functions, guiding internal clients on objectives, deliverables, risks, and dependencies.
- Identify public policy risks and opportunities, and make evidence-based recommendations to support credible advocacy campaigns backed by data and stakeholder engagement.
- Maintain accurate records of government engagement in line with applicable laws and company policy, and report progress against objectives to leadership.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
