Our Practice Solutions team leads the Firm’s innovation initiatives, supporting our lawyers in client delivery excellence. The team has deep expertise in working with established and emerging technologies, data analytics and data science, knowledge solutions and process re-engineering. The Practice Solutions team works with our lawyers to identify innovative solutions to support our clients. Through fostering a Firmwide culture of innovation, we encourage our lawyers to think creatively about how to deliver the best value to our clients and we ensure that White & Case remains at the forefront of advancements in the legal industry.

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced, analytical and commercially minded Market & Competitive Insights Manager to join our global Research & Market Intelligence team.

This is an opportunity to lead high-impact market and competitive intelligence work that informs the Firm’s client strategy, business planning and growth priorities. You will provide clear, actionable, data-driven advice to senior stakeholders while delivering the intelligence that supports everyday client development, pitches and relationship-building activity.

Working closely with the Firm’s leadership, Executive Committee, Office of the Firm’s Chair, Marketing & Business Development and Strategy teams, you will help build and embed market intelligence capabilities across our global network. Your work will influence strategic decisions and enable colleagues across the Firm to act with confidence.

Duties And Responsibilities

Strategic Intelligence & Analysis

  • Research, analyse, and present high-impact client, sector, market and competitive intelligence via briefings, strategic reports, and presentations to identify new business opportunities and drive the Firm's growth.
  • Liaise with the Firm's leadership and Executive Committee to provide research and analysis to support strategic decision-making, including the production and presentation of timely and concise summary reports with clear insights and recommendations.
  • Provide proactive market and competitor intelligence to the wider partnership and other parts of the Firm, and monitor the Firm's key clients and industry sectors and related news sources to identify and communicate information about potential opportunities to relevant stakeholders.
  • Design and execute quantitative and qualitative analysis on broad market and competitive themes down to single-name analysis, across different industries and markets.
  • Monitor and analyse risks, opportunities and developments in the legal competitive market, providing actionable insights.

Business Development & Client Growth

  • Work with sector and practice group leadership to support client-targeting and growth strategies through competitive intelligence, deal analytics and market insights.
  • Help partners and business services leaders across the Firm build their practice and relationships with clients, guiding them through market opportunities in advance of client presentations as well as contributing to business plans, pitch preparation, competitive analysis, and client profiles.
  • Deliver strategic intelligence to support lateral hiring decisions, including competitor benchmarking, practice-area mapping, and candidate-market analysis.

Data, Technology & Systems

  • Stay at the forefront of developments in business and competitive intelligence methodologies, including the application of AI, data analytics, and automation, to drive innovation and efficiency across the function.
  • Recommend and promote market, client and competitive intelligence tools to ensure access to the most relevant and up-to-date resources amongst team members and across the wider Firm.
  • Work closely with the global Business Intelligence team to help develop digital research products combining external and internal data sources as well as AI.

Stakeholder Engagement & Profile Building

  • Present findings, market perspectives and recommendations to partners, senior management and other key internal stakeholders.
  • Build the profile and credibility of the Research & Market Intelligence function by bringing informed commercial perspectives to strategic discussions and growth planning.
  • Act as a subject matter expert on priority industries, commercial themes and competitor activity.
  • Deliver training, best-practice guidance and self-service resources for lawyers, Marketing & Business Development colleagues and other teams using market intelligence.
  • Build strong relationships across Business Intelligence, Practice Solutions, Marketing & Business Development and Strategy to create a coordinated approach to reporting and insight.

Team & Vendor Management

  • Help manage and guide the global Market Intelligence team, ensuring timely and high-quality responses to requests from key internal stakeholders/ functions.
  • Support management of the outsourced research provider, including priority-setting, briefing, coordination of complex requests and performance tracking against agreed KPIs.
  • Lead complex research engagements from initial scoping through to final delivery, applying rigorous quality control and sound project management.
  • Coach and mentor colleagues on research methods, data analysis and the effective use of analytics in commercial intelligence.
  • Foster an inclusive, collaborative and high-performing team culture grounded in professional excellence and client service.

Experience

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 10 years of research and analytical experience, ideally in strategy or management consulting, investment banking, other professional / financial services firms or a corporate environment; previous experience at an international law firm is preferred but not required.
  • A proven track record in shaping and delivering business and competitive intelligence strategy and research capabilities.
  • Robust experience in data analytics and client and competitive insight role delivering action-oriented analysis to support strategic goals, drive business decision-making, and growth.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent required; MBA preferred.

Knowledge & Technical Skills

  • Solid understanding of research techniques and technologies, in-depth data analysis, and market and competitor intelligence.
  • Deep expertise in business, financial and market data sources, and the ability to evaluate and adopt new platforms as the market evolves.
  • Knowledge of key financial data platforms such as Mergermarket, Capital IQ, PitchBook, Dealogic, Bloomberg, Debtwire and Refinitiv; understanding of and previous experience working with complex M&A, Private Equity, Capital Markets and Project Finance data is preferred.
  • A strong understanding of the global macroeconomic and geopolitical environment and trends impacting the firm’s key industries, such as private capital, technology, energy, and infrastructure.
  • Proficiency in telling impactful stories behind the data.
  • Proficiency in data visualisation and analytics tools, and the ability to translate and present complex issues and findings in simple, easy-to-understand formats using graphs, charts, tables and diagrams.
  • A strong understanding of how AI can be applied to workflows, including robust experience using AI platforms in research and analytics.
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook).

  • A credible, trusted adviser with the influencing skills to engage at partner and board level, and a proven ability to build and sustain cross-functional relationships.
  • Proven hands-on project management skills, with the ability to multitask, change priorities as required, and manage multiple deliverables and small teams within a tight timeframe whilst delivering high-quality work.
  • Experience working in a global environment and sensitivity to different cultural perspectives.
  • Strong commercial awareness, with the ability to understand the Firm's business model, revenue drivers, and competitive positioning, and a genuine passion for understanding markets, industries, and the forces shaping the legal sector.
  • An effective and empathetic manager who can attract, motivate, and develop a globally integrated, collaborative, diverse, and high-performing team.
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills, with the ability to foster a collaborative culture within the team.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with the appropriate discretion.

Location

This role is based in London.
Our standard office hours are 09:30-18:00, with a requirement for 4 days (Monday – Thursday) in the office per week.
