- Independently verify that critical Quality, Health, Safety, Environmental, and Security controls are effectively implemented, understood, and sustained at the point of execution.
- Assess the effectiveness of project leadership oversight, workforce engagement, contractor management, supervision, and assurance activities in identifying and managing QHSES risks.
- Identify, evaluate, and escalate critical control failures, systemic weaknesses, emerging risks, and weak signals that may impact safety, quality, environmental performance, security, regulatory compliance, cost, schedule, or business reputation.
- Provide objective, evidence-based assurance and recommendations to Project Directors, Project Managers, Construction Managers, QHSES Managers, and Operations Leadership regarding the effectiveness of controls, leadership behaviours, and management systems.
- Verify the effectiveness and sustainability of corrective and preventive actions arising from audits, assessments, incidents, investigations, client findings, and regulatory reviews through Verification of Effectiveness (VOE).
- Analyse assessment results, incidents, trends, recurring findings, and performance indicators to identify opportunities for risk reduction, continual improvement, and leadership intervention.
- Prepare and present assessment reports, executive summaries, assurance insights, and risk-based recommendations to project and business leadership.
- Contribute assurance intelligence, lessons learned, recurring themes, and emerging risk insights to management reviews, leadership forums, and business improvement initiatives.
- Provide coaching and mentoring to Project Leadership, QHSES teams, supervisors, and frontline personnel to strengthen leadership controls, risk management practices, management system implementation, critical control effectiveness, and sustainable corrective action management.
- Promote a learning-focused assurance culture through independent challenge, constructive feedback, leadership engagement, and sharing of lessons learned and best practices across projects and functions.
- Promote compliance with the McDermott Code of Business Conduct and reinforce consistent QHSES leadership expectations across all levels of project execution.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
