The AI Accelerator at Boehringer Ingelheim
Most diseases remain poorly understood at a biological level. Despite years of research, the mechanisms behind many conditions are unclear, limiting progress in finding the right targets, interventions and medicines for patients.
The AI Accelerator exists to change that. Based in London and part of Computational Innovation (@computationalinnovation), a global organisation specialising in computational biology, human genetics, data excellence and AI, this initiative builds production-quality AI capabilities to deepen our understanding of disease biology and increase the probability of therapeutic success.
We apply neural-based methods across the biomedical data landscape to:
- Integrate heterogeneous, multimodal data sources
- Infer biological relationships
- Embed causal reasoning into our AI systems
Our goals go beyond prediction: we aim to explain and understand why disease occurs.
This work spans multiple domains, including:
- Electronic health records and medical imaging (patient segmentation)
- ‘Omics data (novel therapeutic targets)
- Transcriptional change analysis for disease-causing variants
- Target modulation simulations
A critical component of our success is ensuring the Accelerator operates with discipline, coordination and strategic clarity—translating research into real portfolio impact.
The Position: Manager / Associate Director of Scientific and Strategic Operations (AI Innovation)
Boehringer Ingelheim is seeking a Manager / Associate Director (AI Innovation) to act as the operational right-hand to the Head of AI/ML, overseeing execution, coordination and strategy alignment across the AI Accelerator.

Core Responsibilities
This role sits at the heart of the Accelerator’s operations, liaising between teams and Computational Innovation (CI). Key duties include:

Strategic alignment
- Partner with the Head of AI/ML, Leadership Teams and wider CI Leadership to guide long-term planning.

Operational architecture
- Collaborate with the global CI PMO to design operational processes, tools and governance structures for the AI Accelerator, ensuring alignment with overarching CI goals.

Delivery and compliance
- Ensure the Accelerator executes projects efficiently and in line with governance frameworks.
- Monitor portfolio milestones, dependencies and risks, addressing bottlenecks with leadership interventions.
- Maintain alignment with the global CI PMO and deliver high-impact results.

- Prepare high-quality materials for leadership reviews, executive updates and decision-making sessions, covering:

Required Qualifications

Academic Background
- Required: Master’s degree in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Computational Biology, or a related field.
- Advantageous: Advanced qualifications (e.g., MSc, MBA or PhD).
Professional Experience
- Strength in strategy:
- Proven track record in high-leverage strategy or chief-of-staff roles (consulting experience is a plus).
- Project management:
- Experienced in driving ambitious, complex initiatives through ambiguous environments.
- Stakeholder management:
- Demonstrated ability to align senior leaders, build trust and prioritise effectively.
- Communication:
- Strong skills in written and verbal communication, particularly for executive-level audiences.
- Execution excellence:
- Ability to prioritise across multiple workstreams with emotional intelligence and fine judgement.
- Technical credibility:
- Working effectively in AI and scientific research environments, with emotional intelligence for navigating complexity.
Bona Fide Benefit
- Understanding of AI’s role in drug discovery and early clinical development—though not essential, it is advantageous.
