I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Your Skills and Experience
You will be:
- A qualified solicitor (SRA or Law Society registered), with at least six years' post-qualification experience gained within a commercial, technology, or financial services practice, or within a relevant in-house legal team.
- An experienced commercial lawyer with strong drafting, negotiation, and advisory skills.
- Familiar with advising clients operating in regulated sectors, particularly financial services, fintech, or payments.
- Interested in the way payment products and payment services are developed, delivered, and commercialised.
- Comfortable working alongside financial services regulatory specialists on matters involving both commercial and regulatory considerations.
- Able to provide pragmatic and commercially focused advice to clients.
- An effective communicator with strong organizational and stakeholder management skills.
- Experienced in supervising, mentoring, and developing junior lawyers.
- Interested in building client relationships and contributing to the development of the practice.
Previous experience advising on payments-related matters would be beneficial but is not essential. We would welcome applications from candidates with broader commercial, technology, or financial services experience who are interested in developing a payments specialism.
