Sefton New Directions

Sefton New Directions is Sefton Council’s wholly owned adult social care company, established in 2007 and employing around 350 staff.

The company delivers a wide range of care and support services across the borough, from reablement and rapid response to day services, respite care and long-term residential provision for older people and adults with learning disabilities, physical disabilities and mental health needs.

As a wholly owned company, Sefton New Directions plays a key role in delivering the Council’s wider ambitions for Adult Social Care, Health and Wellbeing, supporting strategic priorities around prevention, independence, reducing inequalities and enabling people to live well in their communities. The company is a key delivery partner within the wider health and care system, working alongside the Council, the NHS and neighbourhood health partners.

The company is now entering an important phase with a significant transformation programme underway to ensure services are affordable, viable, sustainable and continue to deliver high quality care, while also improving outcomes, quality and responsiveness to future demand. There is scope to explore new revenue streams and commercial opportunities, including services to private self-funders, linked to supporting the long-term sustainability of services and delivering positive outcomes for Sefton residents.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
