Company Description

Chelmsford City Football Club is a full-time professional football club competing in the National League South, with a stadium capacity of over 3,500. The club operates a comprehensive football structure including a Men’s First Team, Boys Academy and Youth (U7–U18), and a Women’s and Girls’ pathway from U10 to First Team. It also delivers walking football, community initiatives, and disability sport programs, reflecting a strong commitment to local engagement and inclusion. In addition to football, the club offers hospitality and suite hire, hosts indoor and outdoor annual events, and stages live music, providing diverse commercial and fan experiences.

Role Description

The Managing Director – Business & Operations is a full-time, on-site role based in Chelmsford, responsible for overseeing the club’s day-to-day business and operational activities. This position leads the planning and delivery of matchday and non-matchday operations, including stadium utilization, hospitality, events, and community programs. The role manages budgets, financial performance, and commercial initiatives, working closely with sponsorship contacts and internal stakeholders to drive revenue growth and operational efficiency. The Managing Director provides strategic leadership across business functions, ensures compliance with league and regulatory standards, and develops processes that support all football departments and the wider club. The role also includes line management responsibilities, performance monitoring, and continuous improvement of systems that enhance the experience for players, staff, supporters, partners, and the local community.

  • Strong Operations Management and Business Management skills to oversee complex club activities and multi-department coordination.
  • Solid Finance and Budgeting skills to manage financial planning, reporting, and cost control across the organization.
  • Advanced Analytical Skills to interpret data, assess performance, and support evidence-based decision-making.
  • Relevant experience in sports, entertainment, or venue management, including stakeholder and sponsor relationship management, is highly beneficial.
  • Proven leadership, people management, and communication abilities, with experience guiding cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the capacity to balance strategic priorities and day-to-day operational demands.
  • Experience with compliance, risk management, and health and safety in a stadium or event context is an advantage.
  • Formal education in Business, Management, Finance, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience, is preferred.
