Managing Director

UK: Home-based with regular UK Travel
Commercial & Industrial Refrigeration

THE OPPORTUNITY

Our client is a leading UK manufacturer of natural refrigerant, air source heat pump and refrigeration systems for commercial and industrial applications.

With over 40 years of experience, the business designs and manufactures its systems in the UK, delivering efficient, future-proof solutions across a diverse customer base including hospitals, supermarkets, offices, universities, airports and other commercial and industrial environments.

The business also provides expertise across system design, installation and commissioning, supporting customers throughout the project lifecycle.

As part of a wider international group, the business is continuing to develop its market position, technology offering and wider green energy solutions.

This is a key leadership appointment for an experienced Managing Director / General Manager / Business Leader looking to take full ownership of a technically strong, established and growth-focused business.

THE ROLE

The Managing Director will provide strategic and operational leadership for the business, driving:

  • Commercial performance

The successful candidate will develop and deliver the company's commercial strategy while providing leadership across sales, engineering, manufacturing, projects, service delivery, quality, safety, finance and people.

This is a highly visible leadership position with full P&L responsibility and ownership of the overall business strategy and performance.

SENIOR LEADERSHIP STRUCTURE

The Managing Director will lead a strong senior leadership team comprising:

  • Chief Technical Officer
  • Sales Director
  • Chief Marketing Officer
  • Manufacturing Director
  • Finance Director
  • Head of HR
  • Operations Director

The structure is expected to evolve further as the business continues to grow, with further senior leadership appointments planned as the organisation develops.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Leadership

  • Deliver the company's strategic business plan.
  • Identify new markets, revenue streams and business opportunities.
  • Drive innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Lead organisational growth while maintaining operational excellence.

Commercial Management

  • Drive revenue growth and improve profitability.
  • Own overall P&L responsibility.
  • Develop commercial strategies to secure major customers and long-term contracts.
  • Build strong relationships with key customers, suppliers and strategic partners.
  • Monitor market trends and competitor activity to identify opportunities.

Operational Leadership

  • Oversee Engineering, Manufacturing, Projects, Sales, After Care, H&S, Finance and HR.
  • Ensure operational efficiency, quality and compliance.
  • Drive continuous improvement across the business.
  • Maintain high standards of health, safety and environmental performance.

Leadership & Culture

  • Build a high-performance culture focused on accountability and customer excellence.
  • Lead, mentor and develop the senior leadership team.
  • Promote collaboration across all business functions.
  • Champion employee engagement and talent development.

Customer Focus

  • Maintain strong executive relationships with key customers.
  • Ensure exceptional customer service standards.
  • Lead strategic account development and retention initiatives.

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE

  • Significant senior leadership experience within retail or industrial refrigeration, heat pumps, HVAC, engineering services or a related sector.
  • Proven experience managing a commercially focused business with full P&L responsibility.
  • Demonstrated success delivering business growth.
  • Strong financial and commercial management experience.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE

  • Experience working with major retail, supermarket, commercial, industrial or public sector clients.
  • Knowledge of refrigeration, HVAC and/or heat pump technologies.
  • Understanding of relevant legislation, environmental compliance and sustainability initiatives.
  • Understanding of the energy transition and decarbonisation agenda.
  • Experience leading business transformation, organisational change or acquisition integration.
  • Degree or professional qualification in Engineering, Business or a related discipline.
  • Membership of a relevant professional body is advantageous.
