Managing Editor, Engineering Integrity Society
Freelance contract
The Engineering Integrity Society (EIS) is looking for an experienced freelance Managing Editor to oversee the production of its technical journal, published twice a year in March and September.
This is a part-time freelance role, with the majority of the work taking place during two production periods each year: approximately January–March and July–September. The role would suit an experienced editor, publication manager or editorial designer who is looking for a flexible freelance commitment.
The Managing Editor will take responsibility for coordinating the production of each issue from initial content gathering through to final artwork and delivery to the printer. You will work closely with the EIS Editor and Marketing & Events Manager, as well as regular contributors, technical committee members, advertisers, and external suppliers.
About the Engineering Integrity Society
The Engineering Integrity Society is a long-established engineering charity supporting engineers in industry and academia. The Society focuses particularly on fatigue, measurement & testing, and durability.
The EIS organises technical seminars, webinars, conferences, and exhibitions and publishes its technical journal twice a year.
Key responsibilities
The Managing Editor will be responsible for the end-to-end production of each issue, including:
- Planning and managing the production schedule for each issue and ensuring deadlines are met.
- Liaising with the Marketing & Events Manager to agree the content and structure of each issue.
- Communicating with regular column contributors and coordinating the submission of articles and other content.
- Liaising with EIS technical committee members and other subject experts to ensure technical content is accurate and appropriate.
- Editing and proofreading articles and other copy as required, maintaining a consistent editorial style and high standard of accuracy.
- Preparing Industry News and Product News items from press releases and other material supplied.
- Designing and laying out the complete journal using Adobe InDesign, working within the established EIS style and format.
- Preparing images, graphics, and artwork for publication, using Adobe Photoshop where appropriate.
- Managing the final artwork and pre-press process, including checking files before submission to the printer.
- Liaising directly with the printer and fulfillment company and managing the production process through to completion.
- Sourcing and liaising with advertisers, including obtaining advertising artwork and ensuring that adverts are correctly positioned and supplied to the printer.
- Working with the Marketing & Events Manager to obtain reports, event information, Society news, and other content required for each issue.
- Keeping the Editor and Marketing & Events Manager informed of progress and highlighting any issues that could affect the production schedule.
- Undertaking other reasonable editorial and production tasks associated with the journal.

Skills and experience
We are looking for someone with proven experience of managing and producing publications, ideally including technical, engineering, scientific, academic, or professional content.
The successful candidate will have:
- Previous experience in editorial or publication production, ideally involving responsibility for an entire publication or journal.
- Excellent written English and proven editing and proofreading skills.
- Strong Adobe InDesign skills, with the ability to take a publication from supplied copy through to print-ready artwork.
- Experience of preparing artwork for professional printing and working with printers.
- Good working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop.
- Excellent attention to detail and the ability to identify errors in copy, layout, images, and technical information.
- Strong organizational and project-management skills, with the ability to manage several contributors and deadlines simultaneously.
- The confidence to liaise professionally with technical specialists, contributors, advertisers, and external suppliers.
- The ability to work independently, take ownership of the production process, and identify potential problems before they become issues.
- A reliable and methodical approach, with a strong commitment to meeting publication deadlines.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a small team remotely.

Technical requirements
The successful candidate must have access to:
- Their own current Adobe Creative Cloud subscription, including Adobe InDesign and Adobe Photoshop.
- Their own suitable computer and reliable internet connection.
- Microsoft Word or equivalent software for working with supplied copy and documents.
- Experience of MathType or Equation Editor would be advantageous, particularly for working with technical and mathematical content, but is not essential.
Experience of technical publications
Experience of working with engineering, scientific, academic, or other technically detailed publications would be particularly valuable. An understanding of the need for technical accuracy.
What we offer
- Flexible freelance working, with work concentrated into two production periods each year. This equates to around 80 – 90 hours of work per issue.
