About The Role

This senior commercial position, based in Exeter, Devon, is with a civil engineering contractor holding a substantial pipeline of infrastructure work throughout the South West. As Managing Quantity Surveyor, the post-holder takes charge of commercial performance across multiple projects, guiding and developing the commercial team while collaborating closely with operational colleagues. Duties encompass cost control, forecasting, valuations, and contractual administration.

This full-time, permanent appointment suits a seasoned professional with proven civil engineering experience and strong leadership, negotiation, and analytical abilities. The salary ranges from £80,000 to £85,000 annually, supplemented by a car, bonus, and further benefits.

Based from Exeter, you will take a senior commercial role within the business, overseeing the commercial performance of civil engineering projects while working closely with operational teams and supporting the wider commercial function.

The Role

As Managing Quantity Surveyor, your responsibilities will include:

  • Taking commercial responsibility for civil engineering projects
  • Leading, supporting, and developing members of the commercial team
  • Cost control, forecasting, and commercial reporting
  • Subcontract procurement and account management
  • Contract administration
  • Identifying and managing commercial risk
  • Working closely with operational and project teams
  • Client and stakeholder management
  • Supporting projects from procurement through to final account
  • Contributing to commercial strategy and the continued development of the regional business

The Candidate

Applications are welcomed from established Managing Quantity Surveyors as well as experienced Senior Quantity Surveyors ready to progress into an MQS position.

You Will Ideally Have

  • Strong Quantity Surveying experience within civil engineering or infrastructure
  • Experience commercially managing civil engineering projects
  • Good contractual knowledge, ideally including NEC
  • Strong cost management, forecasting, and reporting experience
  • Experience managing or supporting other members of a commercial team
  • Excellent commercial awareness and negotiation skills
  • The confidence to work closely with operational teams, senior management, and clients
  • A relevant Quantity Surveying/commercial qualification or equivalent industry experience
