Managing Quantity Surveyor

Due to continued growth within their Water & Wastewater Capital Delivery business, our client is seeking an experienced Managing Quantity Surveyor to lead the commercial delivery of a portfolio of major infrastructure projects.

Location: The role will be based in the London area with offices based in both North and South London.

This is a strategic leadership position, responsible for driving commercial performance, managing risk, overseeing contract administration and leading a team of Quantity Surveyors to ensure successful project delivery. The role offers the opportunity to work on complex capital programmes that improve water infrastructure resilience while protecting the environment for future generations.

Key Managing Quantity Surveyor Responsibilities

  • Lead the commercial management of multiple water and wastewater capital delivery projects.
  • Take overall responsibility for valuations, applications for payment, variations, compensation events and final accounts.
  • Ensure contractual obligations are managed effectively under NEC3 and NEC4 forms of contract.
  • Drive commercial performance through accurate cost forecasting, CVRs, WIP reporting, accruals and margin management.
  • Provide strategic commercial advice and support to operational and project delivery teams.
  • Identify, manage and mitigate commercial risks whilst maximising opportunities for value recovery.
  • Oversee subcontract procurement, administration and commercial management.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients, supply chain partners and key stakeholders.
  • Lead commercial governance processes, ensuring compliance with company procedures and contractual requirements.
  • Manage disputes, contractual notices and negotiations where required.
  • Produce and present commercial performance reports to senior leadership.
  • Lead, mentor and develop a team of Quantity Surveyors and commercial professionals, driving best practice and continuous improvement.

About You

Essential Experience & Skills As a Managing Quantity Surveyor:

  • Significant experience within a Quantity Surveying or Commercial Management role in the construction, utilities or infrastructure sector.
  • Previous experience operating at Senior Quantity Surveyor or Managing Quantity Surveyor level.
  • Strong working knowledge of NEC3 and NEC4 contracts.
  • Proven ability to manage the commercial delivery of multiple projects or programmes.
  • Strong financial acumen with experience in forecasting, cost management and commercial reporting.
  • Experience leading commercial teams and developing junior team members.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and client-facing skills.
  • Strong negotiation, communication and problem-solving abilities.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel and commercial management systems experience.

Desirable:

  • Experience working on water infrastructure projects.
  • Previous experience working with Thames Water or another UK water utility provider.
  • Professional membership or working towards chartered status (RICS/CICES).
