Managing Quantity Surveyor – Freelance

Infrastructure & Utilities | Contract Opportunity

I’m currently recruiting for an experienced Managing Quantity Surveyor for a freelance opportunity supporting major infrastructure and utility projects across the UK.

This is a key commercial position, working closely with Project Managers, operational teams, subcontractors and suppliers to manage commercial performance, control risk and maximise project profitability.

The Role

  • Take responsibility for the commercial management of projects through to final account.
  • Prepare commercial reports, forecasts, claims and supporting documentation.
  • Monitor project risks and opportunities and maintain accurate commercial records.
  • Manage subcontractors and suppliers, including quotations, valuations, variations, claims and final accounts.
  • Identify and manage variations, delays and compensation events.
  • Monitor project costs, value, margins and financial performance.
  • Produce cost/value reconciliations, forecasts and commercial reports.
  • Work closely with Project Managers and delivery teams to provide commercial support and advice.
  • Attend project and commercial meetings and maintain strong stakeholder relationships.
  • Maintain detailed site and contractual records to support variations and claims.
  • Ensure commercial activities are delivered in line with project procedures and contractual requirements.

About You

  • Proven experience as a Managing Quantity Surveyor / Senior Quantity Surveyor.
  • Strong background within infrastructure, utilities, energy or major construction.
  • Strong working knowledge of NEC3 / NEC4 contracts.
  • Experience managing subcontractors and supply-chain packages.
  • Strong experience across variations, valuations, claims and compensation events.
  • Experience with cost/value reconciliation, forecasting and financial reporting.
  • Strong understanding of contract costing and commercial risk.
  • Excellent negotiation, communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Strong analytical and numerical capability.
  • Good IT skills, particularly Excel.
  • Degree or relevant qualification in Quantity Surveying.

  • Experience within Electrical Transmission, Overhead Lines, Power, Utilities or wider Energy Infrastructure would be highly advantageous.
