About The Role
At Sulzer, we specialise in rotating equipment services, helping customers improve the reliability and performance of critical assets across a wide range of industries. Our York facility is recognised as a Fabrication and Machining Centre of Excellence, benefiting from significant investment in technology, equipment and capabilities to support continued growth and customer demand.
We are looking for a Grinding Operator to join our team.
A Grinding Operator operates grinding machines to shape, smooth, and finish metal or any parts to precise specifications while ensuring quality and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate Grinding Machines: Set up, adjust, and control grinding machines to grind, polish, or finish metal or any parts according to specifications
- Inspect Workpieces: Use micrometers, calipers, gauges, and templates to measure and ensure parts meet dimensional and surface quality standards
- Machine Maintenance: Clean, lubricate, and perform basic maintenance on machines; replace worn or broken parts as needed
- Select and Mount Tools: Choose appropriate grinding wheels or cutting tools and attach them to machines, adjusting speed and feed rates for optimal performance
- Quality Control: Monitor operations, stop machines if problems occur, and set aside defective parts
- Record Keeping: Maintain accurate production records and report any issues with machinery or processes
- Safety Compliance: Follow all safety protocols, and maintain a clean and safe work environment

Skills And Qualifications
- Technical Skills: Knowledge of grinding techniques, machine operation, and precision measurement tools
- Attention to Detail: Ability to detect defects and ensure parts meet exact specifications
- Problem-Solving: Adjust machine settings and troubleshoot issues during operations
- Education: Engineering background
- Physical Requirements: Ability to handle heavy machinery, stand for long periods, and perform repetitive tasks safely
Work Environment
Grinding operative will be working in a manufacturing and industrial repairing environment, including metal fabrication. The role will involve exposure to noise and dust.
