Manufacturing Estimator – Sheet Metal / D365 Business Central
Location: Plymouth
Hours: Full-time (40 hours per week) or four days per week considered
Contract: Permanent
The Role
We are looking for an experienced Manufacturing Estimator to join an established sheet metal manufacturing operation in Plymouth.
This is a varied role combining traditional manufacturing estimating with customer communication, data collection and hands-on use of Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.
The successful candidate will be responsible for producing accurate and commercially competitive quotations, while also playing an important role in improving the quality of manufacturing data held within the business.
You will work closely with customers, production, engineering and administration teams, helping to establish accurate machine and process timings and ensuring relevant costing and manufacturing information is maintained effectively.
As the business expands its use of the Business Central Manufacturing functionality, you will also have the opportunity to help develop BOMs, routings, work centres, machine centres and production processes within the system.
Key Responsibilities
- Produce accurate quotations for sheet metal fabrication and manufacturing work.
- Review customer drawings, STEP files, technical information and specifications.
- Calculate material, labour, machine, process, finishing and other manufacturing costs.
- Communicate directly with customers where required to clarify drawings, specifications and manufacturing requirements.
- Work closely with production and engineering teams to establish accurate manufacturing and process timings.
- Play an instrumental role in collecting and maintaining manufacturing data, including machine timings, process timings, BOMs and WOTs.
- Review previous jobs and manufacturing data to improve the accuracy of future quotations.
- Obtain and review supplier and material pricing.
- Identify opportunities to improve manufacturability and reduce production costs.
- Work closely with the administration team when quotations progress to orders.
- Support the continued development of estimating and manufacturing processes across the business.
Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central
Business Central experience is an essential requirement for this position.

Day-to-day responsibilities within BC will include:
- Adding and maintaining contact and customer cards.
- Adding and maintaining item cards.
- Adding and maintaining sales price lists.
- Creating sales quotations.
- Communicating with the administration team when quotations progress to orders.
- Using historical BC data for costing purposes, including previous suppliers and purchase prices.
- Maintaining accurate commercial and manufacturing information within the system.
As the business expands its use of the Business Central Manufacturing module, the successful candidate will also be involved in:
- Building Assembly and Production BOMs within Business Central.
- Building and maintaining routings.
- Setting up work centres and machine centres.
- Assisting with the creation of production orders and work order tickets.
- Helping establish the data and processes required to make greater use of Business Central's manufacturing functionality.
Previous experience of all of these areas is not necessarily required, but candidates should be comfortable using Business Central and have the ability and interest to develop their knowledge of its manufacturing functionality.
Estimating & Manufacturing Software
The business is also exploring specialist manufacturing estimating software such as Costimator, which can use STEP files to assist with manufacturing cost calculations.
Previous Costimator experience is not required.
However, candidates should be confident learning new software and technology. Experience using similar manufacturing estimating, CAD/CAM, costing or production software would be advantageous.
Essential Experience
- Previous experience within manufacturing estimating, sheet metal fabrication, engineering costing or a closely related position.
- Hands-on experience using Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.
- Good understanding of sheet metal manufacturing and fabrication processes.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications.
- Understanding of manufacturing costs including materials, machine time, labour and processes.
- Experience working with manufacturing data such as BOMs, process information and production timings.
- Good IT and systems skills.
- Strong numerical ability and attention to detail.
- Good commercial awareness.
- Confident communicating with customers to clarify requirements.
- Comfortable working collaboratively with production, engineering and administration teams.

Desirable Experience
- Experience using Business Central within a manufacturing environment.
- Business Central Manufacturing module experience.
- Experience with Production or Assembly BOMs and routings.
- Experience with work centres, machine centres or production orders.
- Previous experience with sheet metal processes such as laser cutting, CNC punching, folding/press brake, welding, powder coating and assembly.
- Experience using STEP files.
- Costimator or similar manufacturing estimating software experience.
- CAD/CAM experience.
- Experience within subcontract manufacturing.
Working Hours
The business is open to either a full-time 40-hour working week or a four-day-per-week arrangement for the right candidate.
Factory operating hours are:
- Monday–Thursday: approximately 07:45/08:00 – 16:30/16:45
- Friday: 08:00 – 13:00
Specific working arrangements can be discussed depending on whether the successful candidate works full-time or four days per week.
Salary & Benefits
- Permanent salaried position.
- Salary paid monthly in arrears on the 28th of each month, or the nearest Friday where this falls on a weekend or bank holiday.
- Three-month probationary period.
- Full-time holiday entitlement of 24 days plus 8 statutory bank holidays.
- Holiday year runs from 1 January to 31 December.
- Holiday entitlement for a four-day working arrangement will be adjusted in line with contracted working hours.
- Company sick pay may be available at management discretion.
The Person
This role would suit someone who combines practical manufacturing knowledge with strong systems skills.
You may currently be working as a Manufacturing Estimator, Sheet Metal Estimator, Fabrication Estimator, Engineering Estimator, Costing Engineer or Technical Estimator.
The key requirement is the combination of manufacturing/estimating knowledge and hands-on Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central experience.
The successful candidate will be comfortable working with data, customers and manufacturing teams and will be interested in helping the business develop the way it uses Business Central and manufacturing technology going forward.
