We're looking for an experienced electrical engineering professional to join our maritime technical team. This is a unique opportunity to provide technical leadership across a modern fleet, influence industry best practice, and help ensure the safe and reliable operation of critical marine electrical systems.
About the Role
You will be the Electrical SME for marine electrical power generation, distribution, automation and operational technology (OT) systems across bp-operated vessels. You will provide technical leadership, assurance and governance to support safe, compliant and high-performing vessel operations. Working closely with shipboard teams, vessel managers, equipment manufacturers and industry partners, you will help deliver reliable performance of complex electrical infrastructure while supporting digitalisation and cyber resilience initiatives. This role is ideal for someone who combines strong technical expertise with a collaborative approach and a passion for improving operational reliability and safety within a maritime environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide Technical Leadership
- Act as the recognised subject matter expert for marine electrical and automation systems.
- Support vessel teams in identifying and resolving complex electrical and operational issues.
- Provide guidance on system performance, reliability and continuous improvement opportunities.
- Share technical expertise across the organisation and support capability development within operational teams.
- Marine Power Generation & Distribution
- Provide specialist oversight of high-voltage and low-voltage marine power generation and distribution systems.
- Support the safe and reliable operation of generators, switchboards, transformers, protection systems, power management systems and associated infrastructure.
- Lead technical investigations into significant electrical failures and reliability events.
- Drive improvements that enhance equipment performance, availability and operational resilience.
- Automation and Control Systems
- Provide expertise in vessel automation, integrated control systems and electrical plant monitoring systems.
- Support troubleshooting of complex automation and control issues.
- Operational Technology Cyber Security
- Support implementation of bp's OT cyber security strategy across marine assets.
- Help identify, assess and mitigate cyber risks affecting critical vessel systems.
- Project & Contractor Management
- Lead technical projects from concept through implementation.
- Manage specialist service contracts and technical suppliers.
- Support budget planning and delivery of approved engineering programmes.
- Industry Engagement
- Represent bp within industry forums, working groups and professional networks.
- Monitor emerging technologies, industry developments and regulatory changes.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
