Gosport Ferry Ltd operates a frequent passenger, bicycle, e-scooter, and motorbike ferry service across Portsmouth Harbour, connecting Gosport with Portsmouth. The service runs 364 days a year, with departures every 15 minutes from early morning until midnight, providing reliable transport for commuters, residents, and visitors. The crossing takes just over four minutes and significantly reduces travel time compared with a 28-mile road journey between the two towns. Gosport Ferry Ltd focuses on safe, efficient, and accessible marine transport, contributing to the local community and regional connectivity.
Role Description
The Marine Engineer will work on-site in Gosport in a full-time capacity, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of ferry vessels and associated equipment. Day-to-day responsibilities include:
- Performing routine and scheduled maintenance
- Diagnosing mechanical and electrical issues
- Carrying out repairs on propulsion systems, engines, and auxiliary machinery
- Conducting inspections
- Monitoring vessel performance
- Documenting maintenance activities in line with company procedures and maritime regulations

The Marine Engineer will collaborate with the operations and deck teams to plan maintenance around service schedules, support safe vessel operations, and assist with emergency breakdowns or unscheduled repairs as needed. The position also includes contributing to continuous improvement in maintenance practices and adhering to all health, safety, and environmental standards.

Qualifications
- Experience in the marine industry, including exposure to maritime operations and marine engineering environments.
- Strong Marine Engineering skills, including maintenance and repair of marine propulsion systems, engines, and auxiliary equipment.
- Background in Merchant Navy or similar disciplined marine settings, with knowledge of maritime safety standards and regulatory requirements.
- Proven ability in maintenance and repair, including fault finding, preventive maintenance planning, and use of relevant tools and diagnostic equipment.
- Relevant technical qualification or apprenticeship in Marine Engineering or Mechanical/Electrical Engineering.
- Understanding of vessel safety procedures, risk assessments, and safe systems of work.
- Ability to work flexibly in a shift-based environment, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and bank holidays.
- ENG1 Seafarer medical required or must be obtained.
- Sailing as engineer onboard as rota requires.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
- Physical capability to work in a marine environment, including manual handling and working in confined spaces, with a commitment to safe working practices.
