About the Role
We are looking for a motivated, detail-oriented individual to join our marine operations team. As a Crude Marine Operator / Senior Crude Marine Operator, you will play a key role in ensuring the safe, efficient, and cost-effective movement of crude oil cargoes from third-party suppliers to Valero's refining system, while upholding our uncompromising safety and environmental standards.
In this role, you will coordinate and execute the day-to-day marine operations and scheduling of crude oil cargoes delivered into Valero's supply chain. Working closely with trading, inspectors, and agents, you will help ensure continuity of crude supply while protecting Valero's commercial interests and operational reliability.
Key Responsibilities
- Schedule and manage marine movements of crude oil cargoes purchased from third-party suppliers, including voyages involving multiple loading locations, discharge terminals, and delivery options.
- Coordinate vessel nominations, loading and discharge operations, and all associated logistics with suppliers, terminals, vessel operators, inspectors, and port agents.
- Enter and maintain accurate operational and commercial data within Valero systems and collaborate with internal departments as required.
- Maintain cargo tracking, voyage monitoring, inventory, and scheduling systems to ensure visibility across the crude supply chain.
- Work closely with Crude Trading, Supply, Refinery Planning, and Commercial teams to support crude procurement and refinery feedstock requirements.
- Analyse logistics activities and marine operations to identify efficiencies, cost savings, and opportunities to optimise vessel and supply chain performance.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with external counterparties, including suppliers, vessel owners, brokers, terminals, and service providers.
- Monitor voyage progress and proactively manage operational challenges, delays, weather disruptions, berth availability, and schedule changes.
- Continuously seek opportunities to optimise voyage economics, minimise demurrage, detention, dead freight, and other crude cargo and vessel-related costs.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, contractual obligations, industry regulations, and HSSE standards throughout all marine operations.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
