Job Opportunity:

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) has an exciting opportunity for an Underwriter to join our Marine team in London. The successful candidate will work closely with the Senior Underwriters in the team and will perform tasks to directly support the underwriting process including pre-quote, pre-bind, bind and post bind transactions. The Underwriter will also perform additional underwriting support activities associated with information gathering and rating for new business, renewals and midterm changes. Extensive ‘in-place’ training will be given by the Senior Underwriters, which will provide the candidate with strong knowledge of the London Marine and Cargo insurance market, enabling them to grow and develop in this exciting line of business. For the reliable, motivated and enthusiastic candidate, there would be a clear path of career progression available.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Triage and review broker submissions
  • Prepare underwriting narratives, pricing tools and policy documentation
  • Draft new business and renewal quotations and review with the Senior Underwriters
  • Attend broker and customer meetings as required
  • Correspond with brokers, join account negotiations, and follow up on outstanding information
  • Support the Senior Underwriters with all activities related to account development and underwriting
  • Assist with team project work including rater development, new system integration, broker engagement, customer pipelining
  • Maintain electronic files and ensure file integrity

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • At least 2 to 5 years of insurance market experience within either a broker or insurer (experience in the Marine / Cargo line of business preferred but not essential)
  • Self-motivated, proactive and uses own initiative
  • Ability to work as a part of a team in a highly collaborative environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven competency in MS Office applications
  • Strong electronic data and electronic file management skills
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong willingness to learn
  • Customer focused. Able to build and maintain relationships with our customers and business partners, and with internal colleagues
  • Minimum of A level or equivalent educated with strong grades
  • Progress with CII exams and/or willingness to obtain qualification
  • A demonstrated interest in a career in insurance would be highly regarded
