Job Description

Overview

Are you a maritime safety engineer looking to support the safe design, integration and operation of complex naval capabilities? Do you want to broaden your experience across platforms, systems and the wider naval capability lifecycle?

We’re expanding our defence maritime safety capability. Join us and support work across surface ships, submarines, naval systems, platform integration, acceptance, in-service support and modification, while retaining opportunities to collaborate across our wider defence safety capability.

AtkinsRéalis is a world-class engineering services and nuclear organisation delivering complex and critical programmes across defence, aerospace, nuclear and other highly regulated sectors.

Join our established Safety & Environmental Assurance community; knowledge sharing and collaboration are at the heart of what we do. You’ll benefit from:

  • Formal technical assurance, peer review and access to experienced maritime safety specialists.
  • Domain Communities of Interest and professional networks.
  • Regular team meetings, knowledge-sharing events and informal mentoring.
  • Career development support aligned wherever possible to your experience, interests and goals.

We aim to align assignments with your skills, interests and career goals while balancing client and business needs. We welcome applicants from industry, MOD and the Armed Forces, including those returning after a career break. Assignments could include:

  • Safety assurance and safety cases for surface ships, submarines, naval systems and platform integration.
  • Hazard logs, risk assessments and ALARP justification supporting design, certification and operation.
  • Work with naval operators, suppliers, delivery teams and assurance authorities.
  • Digital safety information and CAE approaches that improve access to current evidence for operators, maintainers and decision-makers.

Your role

You will contribute to safety engineering and assurance across the procurement, design, integration, acceptance, in-service support and modification of naval platforms and systems. You will help ensure that equipment and system-level safety evidence supports coherent platform-level arguments, and that safety risks, interfaces and changes are managed in accordance with Defence Maritime Regulations.

  • Support the development and maintenance of Safety and Environmental Case Reports, Safety Case Reports, safety assessments, Safety and Environmental Management Plans and supporting hazard information for surface ships, submarines and naval systems.
  • Develop and maintain eCassandra or equivalent hazard logs, supporting Hazard Identification and Assessment workshops and through-life risk management.
  • Develop Claims, Arguments and Evidence that allow equipment- and system-level safety evidence to support the wider platform safety case.
  • Assess the safety implications of equipment integration, configuration change, maintenance arrangements, upgrades and changes in operational use.
  • Support assurance against Defence Maritime Regulations and relevant Risk Control Systems, including platform-certification and assurance activity where appropriate.
  • Produce clear technical reports and safety information for Delivery Teams, Design Authorities, Platform Authorities, operators, maintainers and decision-makers.
  • Work with naval Delivery Teams, system and platform authorities, operators, maintainers, equipment suppliers and assurance stakeholders.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
