Full job description

The Marketing and Communications Officer will lead the planning, delivery, and evaluation of marketing and communications activities across Primrose Hospice and Family Support Centre.

The post holder will be responsible for raising the profile of the Hospice’s services and impact; strengthening the organisation’s reputation; increasing engagement with supporters, donors, volunteers, healthcare professionals, and the wider community; and supporting fundraising and retail income through effective marketing and communications campaigns.

Working collaboratively across all departments, including working closely with senior leadership and senior management teams, the Marketing and Communications Officer will ensure that communications are compelling, consistent, audience-focused, and aligned with the Hospice’s strategic objectives.

Key Responsibilities

Marketing and communications strategy

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate the marketing and communications plan aligned to the Hospice’s strategic priorities.
  • Identify opportunities to increase profile, awareness, engagement, service uptake, and income through integrated marketing campaigns.
  • Monitor communication trends and sector best practice, recommending innovative approaches where appropriate.
  • Responsible for effectively managing the marketing and communications budget.
  • Prepare regular reports demonstrating performance against agreed objectives and key performance indicators.

Brand management

  • Act as guardian of the Primrose Hospice brand.
  • Ensure consistency of messaging, design, and tone across all communications.
  • Support the development and implementation of brand guidelines.
  • Work with external suppliers, designers, printers, and agencies as required.

Campaign planning and delivery

  • Plan, coordinate, and deliver high-quality marketing and communications campaigns across digital and traditional channels.
  • Manage campaign timelines, resources, and evaluation to ensure objectives are met.
  • Produce post-campaign analysis and recommendations for future improvements.
  • Support organisation-wide initiatives, awareness campaigns, service launches, and fundraising appeals.

Content creation and storytelling

  • Develop compelling and engaging content for a range of audiences and channels.
  • Write, edit, and proofread:
    • Press releases and news stories
    • Work with patients, clients, staff, and volunteers to create case studies ethically and sensitively.
    • Fundraising appeals (in collaboration with the fundraising team)
    • Website content
    • Social media content
    • Bi-yearly Primrose Bulletin
    • Annual reports
    • Flyers and leaflets
  • Ensure all communications reflect the Hospice’s values, tone of voice, and brand identity.

Digital marketing

  • Lead day-to-day management and development of the Hospice website, ensuring content remains current, accessible, and engaging.
  • Develop and manage social media content plans across relevant platforms.
  • Monitor and respond appropriately to online engagement.
  • Manage email marketing activity, including regular supporter communications.
  • Utilise analytics tools to monitor website traffic, engagement, and campaign effectiveness.
  • Implement SEO and AEO best practice to improve online visibility.

Media and public relations

  • Build and maintain positive relationships with local, regional, and sector media.
  • Identify opportunities for media coverage that raise the profile of the Hospice’s services and fundraising activity.
  • Respond to media enquiries and coordinate interviews when required.
  • Prepare key messaging and briefing materials for spokespeople.
  • Act as a spokesperson for the Hospice where appropriate.

General responsibilities

  • Act as an ambassador for Primrose Hospice at all times.
  • Support fundraising activities and events, including occasional evenings and weekends (with time off in lieu provided).
  • Support any marketing volunteers.
  • Participate in mandatory training and ongoing professional development.
  • Adhere to Hospice policies, procedures, and values.
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with UK GDPR and Data Protection legislation.
  • Comply with health and safety requirements.
  • Undertake any other duties appropriate to the role as requested by the Interim Consultant CEO.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential qualifications

  • GCSE English and Maths (or equivalent).
  • Relevant qualification in marketing, communications, PR, journalism, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.

Essential experience

  • Experience in a marketing, communications, PR, or digital marketing role.
  • Experience planning and delivering multi-channel marketing campaigns.
  • Experience managing social media platforms and WordPress websites.
  • Experience creating engaging written content for diverse audiences.
  • Experience using email marketing platforms and digital communication tools.
  • Experience monitoring and evaluating campaign performance.
  • Experience working with a range of stakeholders and building positive relationships.
