Role Purpose
The Marketing Data Scientist will develop data science solutions to improve marketing effectiveness and help the British Council achieve its strategic and commercial objectives. The role will apply analytics, machine learning, and statistics to customer and marketing data to deliver actionable insights and scalable products.
The role will design and implement models to improve marketing effectiveness, customer growth, and commercial performance, and translate marketing and commercial challenges into data science projects with clear success measures. Working with marketing, product, CRM, finance, and other teams, the role will define requirements and deliver solutions, while collaborating with data engineers to combine web, advertising-platform, CRM, and sales data into trusted datasets. The role will apply statistical and machine learning techniques to segmentation, propensity, churn, lifetime value, and forecasting, and develop marketing measurement approaches using experimentation, incrementality, and attribution where appropriate. All work will comply with data ethics, privacy, consent, and governance standards. The role will communicate insights, uncertainty, and recommendations clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders, contribute to marketing data products from MVP through to production and ongoing monitoring, and mentor colleagues and promote data science and marketing measurement best practice.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
