Function:
AI-assisted build, experimentation and marketing tooling
Brands:
Leightons Opticians & Hearing Care | The Hearing Care Partnership
At Leightons Opticians & Hearing Care, we've been caring for communities since 1928. As a proudly independent, family-owned business, we've grown into one of the UK's leading optical and hearing care providers, with 37 stores and two successful hearing care brands operating nationwide.
About the role:
To multiply the build capacity of the Marketing Technology Lead, so that AI-assisted delivery becomes a team capability rather than one individual’s talent.
This is a hands-on build role at the intersection of marketing, technology and data. You will ship customer-facing digital work and internal marketing tools quickly, safely and measurably, treating our websites and marketing platforms as products that get better every release, rather than projects that get finished. It suits someone who enjoys turning manual processes into working tools and can show the efficiency they created.
You will work alongside the Marketing Technology Lead, who owns the roadmap, the platform relationships and the technical standards. Your job is to build within those standards, at pace, with the discipline that lets us trust what we ship.
Why this role exists:
Our new booking journey showed what AI-assisted development can deliver in this business: a better patient experience, built faster and at lower cost than an agency route.
Two constraints followed from that success. The capability sits with one person, and every build request queues behind them. This role removes both. It also puts a second pair of eyes on customer-facing production work that currently has none which, on a healthcare booking journey, matters.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Experience fit
Your summer at the bank plus your econometrics coursework map directly to the day-one responsibilities on this scheme — client modelling, market briefings, and deal support.
Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
Main duties and responsibilities:
- Build and ship. Deliver landing pages, booking journey improvements, forms, automated journeys and internal marketing tools using AI-assisted development.
- Treat our websites as products- Continually improve user experience, conversion and performance across both brands’ sites. Contribute to the prioritised backlog and own the implementation of what is agreed.
- Run the experimentation programme- Build variants, implement tracking and ship experiments with a success metric agreed in advance. Report the result honestly, including the ones that did not work.
- Implement trustworthy measurement- Implement and quality-assure tag management, event tracking and consent handling across GA4 and Google Tag Manager, so the numbers we report can be relied on.
- Build the production toolkit- Own the template libraries, automated quality-assurance checks and self-serve reporting the delivery team relies on, so campaign production gets faster and more consistent over time.
- Make the stack talk to itself- Build and maintain the integrations between our marketing platforms and operational systems - Dotdigital, GA4, Google Tag Manager, Power BI, Optix and Auditdata -working through APIs and integration tooling.
- Document everything you build- What it does, what it connects to, how to change it. The target is that a colleague could pick it up within a day.
- Hold release discipline- Everything in version control, staged before production, with a rollback path. No production asset exists only on one machine or in one chat history.
- Review and be reviewed- Act as the second reviewer on customer-facing work, and have your own work reviewed. This is the role’s primary risk-reduction purpose.
- Build to standard on accessibility and data- Meet accessibility standards on booking and forms work, and handle patient data in line with the data governance and consent standards set by the Marketing Technology Lead.

Our technology stack:
You will work across: two brand websites (WordPress and Shopify), Dotdigital for email and CRM, GA4 and Google Tag Manager for measurement, Power BI for reporting, and integrations into our practice management systems, Optix for optical and Auditdata for audiology. Alongside these, current-generation AI development and automation tooling.
You will not have inherited a clean estate. Part of the appeal of this role is that there is real, visible improvement available in the first six months.
Where AI fits
This is the most AI-native role in the team. It is not a role for someone who has used a chatbot. It is a role for someone who ships working production code with AI assistance and can tell when the output is wrong.
- AI-assisted development. Build production web assets using AI development tooling, with the front-end fundamentals to read, debug and safely modify what is generated.
- Knowing when it is wrong. AI-generated code is confident and frequently subtly incorrect. The core skill of this role is verification, not generation.
- Internal tooling and automation. Build small AI-powered tools that remove repetitive work from the wider marketing team, from reporting assembly to content adaptation.
- Prompt and context engineering. Structure problems so that AI tooling produces usable output first time. Contribute to the internal prompt libraries, context and standards maintained by the Marketing Technology Lead, so that what works for you works for the team.
- Guardrails are part of the job. Version control, staging, review, documentation, accessibility and consent handling are stated accountabilities. Speed without these creates debt that costs more than it saved.
Leightons Opticians & Hearing Care is an equal opportunities employer. We welcome applications from all backgrounds and will make reasonable adjustments throughout the recruitment process where required.
