Climate17 is working with a leading UK renewable energy business to appoint a Markets & Strategy Lead within its growing Optimisation and Trading function.

This is a senior specialist role sitting at the intersection of energy markets, BESS optimisation, trading and technology.

Reporting directly to the Commercial & Trading Director, you will help shape how a growing portfolio of battery storage assets participates across UK power markets, translating market and regulatory developments into actionable optimisation and trading strategies.

Importantly, this isn't a traditional trading desk position, nor is it a pure software or quantitative role. We're looking for someone who understands the commercial dynamics of UK power markets while being technically comfortable working alongside traders, software engineers and data scientists.

The role

You will take a leading role in developing and evolving optimisation strategies across a portfolio of BESS assets, helping maximise value across wholesale, Balancing Mechanism and ancillary service markets.

Working closely with trading, commercial and technology teams, your responsibilities will include:

  • Developing BESS optimisation and revenue stacking strategies across UK power markets
  • Translating market and regulatory developments into actionable trading and optimisation strategies
  • Working with traders to help shape short and medium-term trading strategy
  • Working alongside software engineers and data scientists to help prioritise optimisation platform development
  • Evaluating and developing route-to-market strategies across supplier, aggregator and direct market participation models
  • Providing direction and challenge around asset dispatch and real-time market decisions
  • Identifying new flexibility products, revenue streams and market opportunities
  • Monitoring optimisation performance and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement
  • Maintaining a forward-looking understanding of regulatory and market developments
  • Engaging with key industry stakeholders including NESO, Elexon, suppliers and technology providers

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Experience within a BESS optimiser, energy trader, utility, flexibility provider or renewable energy asset owner would be particularly relevant.

The underlying role requires experience of optimisation platforms or automated/algorithmic dispatch systems and considers direct real-time BESS optimisation experience particularly valuable.
