Master Location: Ross-Shire, IV40 8AJ Salary: Competitive salary plus excellent benefits Schedule: Permanent, full-time, rostered (6 weeks on, 3 weeks off)
For applicants outside an 80-mile radius of Kyle of Lochalsh, Serco offers reimbursement of travel costs at a rate of 0.45p per mile (for both commute directions).
About the Role
Ready to make a real impact? As a Master in our Maritime North – OOP Operations team, you’ll lead the safe and efficient navigation of our vessel, guiding colleagues and clients with expertise and care. Your work will directly support safe, reliable marine operations across the region, delivering vital services to communities and contributing to a secure future.

Responsibilities
As Master, you’ll be entrusted with:
- Vessel Leadership: Oversee day-to-day command, ensuring compliance with Flag and Class legislation, Serco Marine Integrated Management System, and company policies.
- Operational Accountability: Hold full responsibility for all shipboard operations, including vessel and crew certification.
- Preparation & Coordination: Prepare vessels for voyages and tasks; organise and chair shipboard management and safety committee meetings.
- Stakeholder Liaison: Work with operational authorities to manage tasking and execution.
- Documentation: Create and maintain operational, technical, and client documentation.
- Crew Welfare: Promote morale, welfare, and safety for all onboard colleagues.
- Technical Expertise: Maintain full familiarity with vessel construction, navigation, manoeuvrability, and equipment.
- Risk Management: Establish and review risk assessments and operational procedures.
- Inspections: Conduct daily checks to ensure hygiens, cleanliness, and vessel preservation standards are met.
- Critical Navigation: Supervise navigation during high-risk operations (e.g., harbour entry, confined waters, adverse conditions).

Requirements
To thrive in this role as a Master, you’ll need:
- MCA Certificate of Competence as Master 500GT (Near Coastal) minimum.
- Current STCW certification, including essential safety and survival training.
- Unrestricted ENG1 medical certificate.
- A strong safety mentality and methodical approach to operations.
- Eligibility to obtain BPSS (Baseline Personnel Security Standard) or, where required, higher-level security clearance.
Important Note on Security Clearance:
- BPSS involves identity, employment history, nationality, and criminal record checks to meet UK government security standards.
- Additional clearance (e.g., CTC/SC) may be required depending on operational requirements, subjecting you to deeper checks under further national security protocols.
- Residency eligibility applies for certain assignments and clearances.
Alternatively, complete our Occupational Health Questionnaire to demonstrate ability and ensure Hazard Awareness training readiness.
